gentlemen...
as a former sportswriter myself, quite happy to be out of the sell-out industry, let me tell you a little bit about them:
these guys know no more about NFL football, or football overall, than the insightful guys on this site who write informed essays and assessments of our team... and quite often, these "professionals" know quite a bit less about the game, and rely on team-issued press releases, yearbooks and other blowhard colleagues in the industry... excluding former players on ESPN (etc.) who now write, i can assure you 99% of these daily print columnists have never really played the game... at least beyond high school...
the only differences are: 1) they might be slightly faster and concise so as to meet their deadlines; 2) they have access to the team and its facilities because of their press pass...
they certainly don't necessarily write better... i've seen the pre-edited work or some of these guys, and let me tell you... it's usually not what you see in the paper the next day after it's been massaged and edited 5 times over...
keep in mind, these guys HAVE to crank out stories every day, by order of their editors... EVEN WHEN THERE IS NO STORY!!... so you can imagine the drivel they spew and the things they exaggerate or pontificate about based on ... well... nothing...
and then, somehow, they're offered jobs on television and begin running off at the mouth, not just the fingers... what's worst, is that some of these balloon heads become so enamored with themselves that they accept the TV or radio jobs, babble endlessly to hear themselves babble (usually about sports politics or real politics, seldom about Xs and Os) and really don't care what the public thinks about them... they are just that narcissistic...
it takes a special breed to be a sports writer/columnist... they usually have few friends around town, because they've alienated most of the population with their opinion.... but they really don't care, as it's all about their own face time...
say what you want about ESPN's Len Pasquerelli (sp?), but I'll tell you that he's a hell of a writer... he's also one of the few you'll find who 1) actually knows what a "zone blocking scheme" is, and 2) stays off the television ....
