Mel Kipers Grade:

Never been a fan of Kiper but I agree with his grade and assessment and think he is spot on. Hickey did what he needed to do to help clean up the roster he inherited.

We are headed in the right direction now it's Philbin's job to produce.

It really was. 2 OL, a blocking TE, and 2 perfect fit WRs for the system . . . plus Albert and Moreno. They fully believe in Ryan and understand that if this team is not going to succeed, it's not going to be because they set their young franchise QB up to fail by not giving enough support around him.

Exactly right...if ANY one had doubts about their confidence in Tannehill they got there answer. They think he is the man. Im sure they would have loved to get an impact player or two on defense...but the fact is they (Hickey and Phillibin and co) are finally seeing the light that this league runs through your QB. You HAVE to score points....you have to control the ball. You just cant win consistently without doing so. Even if you have a terrific defense, if your offense is going three and out that D won't hold up forever.

Im hopeful these guys pan out...especially James and Turner. A solid offensive line would do wonders for Tannehill. Not only in pass blocking...but people tend to forget that we had several games where we could not run the ball...and I mean at all.

So the world is actually not ending?

Finally somebody honest about the Pats. Their draft was awful and the media i saw on them was fawning over them drafting "Brady's replacement." Ummmm, wasn't that the same thing said about Mallett before?

A grade of a B is fair and spot on. Not sexy, not pretty, but filled our holes with people that can be trusted by the people around them.
I'm glad you mentioned that because I was furious how both networks made such a big deal about that pick!! I was trying to see the picks and all they kept rambling about was that bull****!! I'm so sick of the media bias from ESPN and NFL Network for the Patriots who have had lackluster drafts and they are heralded as the draft gurus!

The other thing that stands out about this draft is high energy players. Landry and Tripp stand out in that regard and Turner is a finisher. I think, ultimately, the team gets three immediate starters from this class. James will be the right tackle, Turner will start at either left or right guard, and I'm going out on a limb to say that Landry beats out Gibson for the slot. Tripp could be a starter in 2015.

Nice to hear Kiper give it the thumbs up....again I like the picks....just thought we could have been a bit smarter in the trading.

I liked this draft. I had no problem with our 1st round pick as it immediately took care of a need and obviously, they stuck to their plan. You also seemed to see Hickey and Philbin on the same page by the types of players being drafted. I think Mr. Hickey did pretty well for his first time.

Lots of comments yesterday and Friday about not trading down in the first. I thought that might be an option for us....but without knowing who our trade partner was or what they were offering, it is impossible to evaluate. It takes two to tango and perhaps I missed it, but I haven't seen any details on any potential offers.

Looking forward to seeing our newest picks making a big contribution in 2014

Tripp
Curious to see if they slot Tripp in as Mike behind Misi - yep, I think they go ahead and shuffle the LB corps with Wheeler at SAM, Misi at MIKE and Ellerbe at WILL

If we get better play out of our interior DL and they can stop OL's getting 2nd level, I like the athleticism that Tripp has at this position - he'd be a 3 down backer for sure with his coverage skills. Has decent technique at taking on blocks just needs to be cleaned up a bit as he's a bit reckless with it but importantly has the want to. Appears to read well, or else he takes chances - hard to tell. Need to learn to wrap up more rather than leading with the shoulder.

Turner
Really high on this kid at Guard - and would like to see him given the chance to learn the one position rather than moving him around and therefore forcing him to think a lot more than he needs to. His movement ability would be a sight to behold next to Pouncey - I'm just curious to see how he copes with the interior of the Bills/Jets DL. He will need to improve his anchor and his power step a lot more, because at Tackle he ability to move with outside rushers is what helped him be successful - his natural strength and apparent nastiness will be tested inside.

Landry
Love the pick - and will be very interested to see if Gibson starts to see some play on the outside. Think he brings a much needed toughness to the WR corps. And hopefully it will force Matthews to pick things up.

We talk about move up or down but keep in mind, if these players contribute this season what is the impact on the cap.
Last years draft didn't play and now they are in 3 year contracts, one year wasted, we pay Albert 9 million a year the new guy playing on the other side makes $500,000, drafted players not playing are a huge cost to the team and if they play well the last year of their contract they want to get paid no 1st year I didn't play discount.
This was the best draft we've had in years without the geniuses like Parcells and Saban just some dumb guy we got from Tampa.

My bottom line is that I don't need the approbation of Kiper, someone with whom I don't frequently agree, to know this was a good draft in general, and certainly better than average considering the hole Hickey was left to dig out from. Kiper being "right" for me is a non-sequitur: less icing on the consensus cake and more of that "broken clock" explanation. :idk:

Agreed.

New England caught lightning in a bottle w/ the combo of Bill and Tommy. They have had a nice run like the one in SF with Walsh/Seifert/Mariucci/Montana/Young, but, it ended and so will the one in Foxboro.

I'm ok with this draft...good meat and taters draft considering the picks we had.

We filled the biggest holes on the team. Whether Kiper and the rest of the draftniks agree is not important. The staff spent hours mulling over hundreds of players and then adjusting on the fly to get some guys.
These players were not the guys that got all the publicity, but they are football players that will help this team.
Although I am concerned about the lack of future pro bowl names, we can definitely win with a cohesive group of no names.
Immediately following the draft, I gave this group a B+. I do not fault the team for not trading down at 19.
