Mel Kipers Grade:

After the draft yesterday I gtraded us at a B, to B plus,we filled Big Needs, and again,we have some playmakers, keeping Tanny upright and on his feet instead of his back to help make those plays happen is huge though, fixing the line was number 1 priority, bar none ! I coulnt believe how some were wanting other positions drafted ahead of o line !!! did they watch the games last year,or just not know the game ?

I like the analogy of this being a quiet but productive draft. On paper there is an awful lot to like about the 2014 draft class. Miami came away with potentially 4 new starters in James, Landry, Turner and Tripp. But what I like most about this draft is the toughness that Landry and Turner bring to the offense, along with another sub package type TE in Lynch, who can actually block. Aikens seems to be a jack of all trades type that may eventually play FS. I personally would of preferred more DB's added to the mix, but overall I'm quite surprised at how different things went under Hickey than in years past under Ireland. It looked as if, Hickey had a certain position targeted in each round and selected a targeted player from within a group of players on his board. Ireland tended to draft players with potential and didn't hit with any kind of regularity or consistency on many players past round 1. I will admit he drafted better in the later rounds than the mid rounds, but unfortunately there weren't enough players who made a huge difference that could have propelled Miami into contention. I like what Hickey did and hope this draft proves to be what Kiper say's it could become.

I think Mel is spot on here and that's not something I say often.

I'm far more optimistic about this draft than I was about last year's, and I agree with Kiper here, a solid B is a good grade and hopefully the top 3 picks are solid contributors right away

The other thing that stands out about this draft is high energy players. Landry and Tripp stand out in that regard and Turner is a finisher. I think, ultimately, the team gets three immediate starters from this class. James will be the right tackle, Turner will start at either left or right guard, and I'm going out on a limb to say that Landry beats out Gibson for the slot. Tripp could be a starter in 2015.
WOW, that may be the most optimistic post of the day. If Gibson is healthy Landry has zero shot at beating him out this year, doubtful he will beat out Mathews. Landry is a slow, small WR that will have trouble early gaining seperation vs NFL corners. He will have to work on his misdirection and will maybe see some action in the 2nd half of the season, but not as a starter. He will be fine in a year or so, but WR is one of the hardest to excell at coming straight out of college.

The first sign you will see is he will start off dropping more balls, as he is thinking about so many things at once. Drops will mildly affect his confidence for a bit, and he will have a mild slump. Then you will see him "get it" by mid season or so. But don't expect him to walk in day one and be a starter, it just isn't realistic. He doesn't have the skill set to create natural mismatches at this level. Liked the pick but he is no day one starter.

After yesterday was over how many of you actually missed Jeff Ireland?

I hope not a single soul on this planet. I am not entirely satisfied with this draft but I'm willing to give the class of 2014 a chance. If nothing else, we are a more professional and more likable organization without Ireland.

Rob Rang of NFLDraftScout.com (now a CBS Sports site) said it best when he said that grading a draft before they play any games is like rating a chef by reading the menu.

Thats a pretty good read, most analysts ive read just say they reached in the first and ignored that it filled a need and ignored the rest of the draft class.

mel did say before the draft that we should reach for a T. Thats why he gives us a B IMO.

I don't care what they say this draft was mismanaged. These guys may turn out great, but the fact he overvalued picks by not trading down or trading up when needed also cost us more depth. Underwhelming

I agree to a certain extent... Truly, we will never know what will become of these picks until they actually get on the field.. But we could have easily gotten an extra 3rd and most likely kept our 4th rounder and STILL drafted the same players with 2 extra guys.

Could have gotten Turner, Borland, Bryant etc etc

Im just wondering.....Have you really watched Landry play? Hes not slow..by any stretch. And he excels at getting seperation. He can easily fight off bump...

Your analysis of Landry is so far different then anything I have read or seen..that I wonder if we are talking about the same player
