Merged: Bennie Anderson RG signed by fins

He is below average. He was our worst O-Lineman last year, and that should tell you a lot since our O-Line was very weak last year.

he may compete for the starting spot, but if he gets it, all it will tell you is that the other guys suck really really bad.

the only reason you could be happy about this signing is that he adds depth. he would be a OK backup.
If he sucks "soooo" much how come the bills waiting so long to release him? Why not release him as soon as possible. Seems like they wanted him to me, they could have signed someone else early on in free agency

He is a good run blocker but I don't believe pass blocking is a strong point here. Not sure where we are going with this signing. Must be just to keep all the other guys motivated. I see no other reason.

ok im pretty happy y got this guy i think he will start this season at RG but do you guys think that the signing of bennie will rule out r chances of signing dan wilkinson which we were seriously considering
maybe this will help... Word is the Dolphins are pleased with the move of Rex Hadnot to center (he's more vocal and physical than Seth McKinney) but want to find competition for McKinney at right guard. On Tuesday, they had a visit and are working on a contract with Bennie Anderson, who was cut by Buffalo last week after starting 15 games last season. . . . Free agent defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson's agent said Tuesday his client likes Miami, and negotiations continue.

Bennie Anderson should at the least, be quality veteran depth, which we lack at the Guard spot. He shouldn't have too much problems fighting off Seth though as he fits Houck's ideal mold. He just needs to prove that the horrible Jills OL issues were the other players and not him.

I'm interested in seeing Wilkinson here, he'd also be a good depth pickup and can help out Traylor at the 3-4.

Big Daddy would be a good one year signing. Traylor's contract is up at the end of the year and hopefully mid way through the season Wright will step up and take the starting job at NT.

Think about salary cap issues as well as changes in the Oline philosophy. He was cut post 6/1 after signing a big FA contract last season.

Also remember Saban talked about WR's not quitting early this season because with Culpepper's size and all three QB's foot speed plays will last longer. Anderson will fit this style well.

Agreed. Good for depth. He will give Seth competition but, I am pulling for Seth to win out as starter. From all appearances Anderson's weakness is pass protection. Yeah, first instinct involves some skepticism since he has been cut by a team who have some significant OL issues. But, there could be issues such as the fact he is not a good fit with the Bill's scheme (you would think the Bills would want to work around that if Anderson is a bright point on a rather bleak picture for the OL but it is the Bills we are talking about!) and hopefully no locker room stuff.

Big Daddy is another move for depth I can buy into. At his age he can't contribute like in his prime but a utility function to spell Traylor would be good for both considering their wear and tear up to this point.

I would be more comfortable if our OL would look like this.

LT-Shelton
LG-James
C-Hadnot
RG-Carey
RT-McIntosh

At 1st when I saw McIntosh, my brain stopped for a second and I got shivers, but come to think of it, that is a very solid or better O-line, if Carey can be as good a Guard as many here believe (Including me).

Anderson was supposed to be a good runblocker though McGahee had a horrible season. That's one issue that hopefully doesn't ring true with us. I'm pretty sure Houck can find some way to make Anderson a better pass blocker. He did that with a bunch of scrubs with similar size and skills in SD who learned to protect Brees it's not out of the picture.

I liken a Wilkinson/Traylor duo to be something like a 2 headed monster. One guy subs in while the other takes a breather without missing a beat. Essentially the hope is they combine to stuff the run as one.

Essentially, he is a stopgap just like Traylor. More precisely, he's a stopgap reliever since Traylor can't handle a full season. I still think Saban might draft a real NT to push Wright in the near future. Wright's a little unstable and could use the motivation.

Yup, Buffalo's line was pretty terrible and this is one of their castoffs. I'm not sure what this says about some of the other guys we've been discussing at RG (the board collectively, not you and I). Here's hoping for the best, but not getting my hopes up.

I remember a few years back we signed another Buffalo castoff offensive lineman who had some weight issues. Jamie Nails turned out to be a really good guard for us until he hurt his achilles. He was never the same after that.

Of course he's "good", the Dolphins signed him. We all know whomever the Dolphins sign is a great pickup and whomever they let go, sucks.

You know what.. I think we can actually make that assumption now. Wow.

Go Saban :cooldude:

A lot of that can be attributed to who Buffalo had playing at quarterback. Nobody was afraid of Buffalo's passing game, so McGahee always was staring at 9 man fronts.

Point out Anderson's negatives all you like, but he's still a better RG than McKinney overall. I think it'll be Seth (and DMac) providing the 'good depth', which is not bad as far as back ups go.

Side note: I still can't figure out why some think DMac would make a better RT than Carey. I'd be very interested in hearing the arguments of those who list DMac at RT and Carey at RG instead of just stating, 'that's the lineup I want'. Anyone?
