MERGED: David Patten gone

make no mistakes about it. Things just got so bad for the Pats and Belechick knows it. Hey they got three big ones. It was a good ride. Its over.

As soon as the coaches were gone, players were sure to follow. And Bruschi thing is just devastating. On a personal level i mean. they still have good talent and can replenish. The bottom line will be that Saban knows him inside and out and we will put the cabash on the Patriots greatness (whatever is left of it).

I wouldn't laugh myself silly just yet. They don't do anything without a purpose if anything. I'd take heed to what they are doing. There are No dopes in that camp.

I believe they drafted P.K. Sam last year from FSU, but he got injured in the preseason and wasn't able to play!!! If I'm wrong somebody can correct me.

You are correct, they have P.K. Sam.

they still have givens(awesome) branch(awesome) they won't miss much....what did brown catch 14 balls all year? ...easily replaced

Dont forget about Bethel Johnson who can FLY!!

Unless Troy Brown gets a good offer from another team (the Browns?) he might very well be back with the Pats for vet minimum.

Losing Bruschi is probably the biggest loss for them, assuming he is done -and why would anyone want to risk ANOTHER stroke? He has money, rings, a Pro Bowl appearance so why risk it? Leave while you still have a good measure of health.

The Pats don't look to be the dominant team of the past couple years, but really they have just gone down a few notches to about where the other AFC playoff teams are. No one should write them off anytime soon though.

By the way, no signing bonus for Brady is TOO MUCH! I hope they give Tom a $45 million bonus and the cap hell that will eventually come with that kind of contract.

they have lost troy brown and david patten.

that is awesome

Not to rain on your parade but Brown hardly contributed anything as a WR last season and Patten can be replaced. Branch and Givens are there 2 best anyways.

Losing Troy Brown, David Patten, and Bruschi, will barely hurt these guys, they still have a couple good WR's, and LB's. Losing Ty Law however I believe would be a big blow. Yea, they got by without him, but he's still one of the best CB's in the game period, and their pass D suffered at times when he wasn't there. I still think New England will be a good team but if it turns out they suck because of losing these players then.......... THANK GOD!!!!!!!

Exactly. The Patriots are so smart.

Duane Starks isn't as good as Ty Law. However, he's better than Earthwind Moreland or Randall Gay, and his cap number is 1/5th of Law's.

Troy Brown, Joe Andruzzi, and David Patten? Good players, but they're all on the wrong side of 30, and they're all replaceable. Depth wide receivers and offensive guards don't cripple teams.

Again - it would be better for the Dolphins if the Pats acted like the Cowboys and try to squeeze every last drop out of the the guys they've won Super Bowls with. Instead, they're trying to reload like the 49ers in late 80's and early 90's when they dropped guys like Ronnie Lott and Joe Montana and Roger Craig before they got too old and expensive.

Okay, let's not kid ourseleves- the Pats are still the team to beat until proven otherwise. They won't be AS good as they've been recently- but they should still COMFORTABLY win the division.

Just a couple of observations:

The Pats made no effort to resign David Patten. Maybe they know something about how he graded out this year that the Redskins don't.

The Pats have signed every O-lineman who has played in a game to an extension within the last 12 months except Center Dan Koppen (still on his rookie deal) and Andruzzi (who they did not make a serious effort to retain). Maybe they know something about how Andruzzi graded out?

I don't know how it makes sense to refer to "losing" Law, since he did not play a single healthy down for the team last season. They "lost" Law a year ago.

With Starks, the Pats now have four cornerbacks on the roster who have started on a SuperBowl winning team. That kind of depth might be handy in a league where multiple receiver spread offenses are the rage. Oh, the combine cap number for these four is between $5 and $6 million. All four together are about the same as Sam Madison's cap number.

For those folks who think losing Patten means the end of the Patriots run,
HA HA HA ... now that you had your laugh, leave.

For others who are more objective, here is Patten's production in this year's post season :

2 receptions for 10 throws in 3 post season games (including back to back drops in the superbowl). This does not define a #1 or a #2 WR. Patten was sometime covered by linebackers in the slot and still had dropsies). As people have pointed out before :
- Patriots made no attempt to sign him, they are looking to get young in this team and unemotionally letting the vets leave if they are getting insane contracts outside.
- They have Branch, Givens (mid-tendered RFA), B. Johnson, PK Sam and are looking for a good KR/PR specialist and a #4 WR. They can use either day-2 picks or get somebody cheap through FA.

So, don't be writing the post-script on the Patriots dominance yet.
