MERGED:does anyone else feel riped off/upset on this surtain deal?!?!

I'm not upset at all. Surtain's a great player, no doubt about it, but there's too much money going to vet players on the D-side of the ball right now. You must also take into consideration that the Defensive Philosophy under Saban will be changing as well. They'll be going from a bend-but-don't-break style to a more aggressive style of D. You don't need two Multi-million dollar corners in that type of Defense. The corners don't have to cover for as long.

Keep in mind, that Howard has started in the NFL, as has Edwards and Poole looks like a keeper. In today's NFL, you can't keep all your high priced players. Saban had to make this move.
 
The only thing I am upset about is swapping 5th round picks... I dont get why we had to do that with them..

but hey, we have a 2nd round pick now w00t!
 
Its unfortunate that we had to do it. I know every fins fan loved this guy, and would have loved him to stay. He is one of the greatest CB's in the league, and was very involved in community projects. Never gave us any trouble on or off the field. He deserves the contract he got, we simply couldn't afford him.

But when I get next years madden, I'll find a way to get him back :D

If Saban were "desperate", he would have traded for the 4th round pick KC wanted to give us.
 
This is the best possible deal that Miami could have gotten. All those "first rounder for Surtain" mongers will finally shut their pie holes now. This was as good as it was going to get for a 29 year old CB with 39 year old knees.
 
I can't believe how many of you are crying.

The guy WOULD HAVE WALKED AWAY NEXT YEAR, AND WE WOULD HAVE GOTTEN NOTHING IN RETURN!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, but that's the truth! We cleared cap space, and got an early pick in the second round in a VERY deep draft. By the time the second round is done, we will have two very very good players added to our team.

Stop complaining and TRUST SABAN!
 
EXACTLY...why the crying? We had to make this deal for many reasons. :shakeno:
 
I am happy with this deal(don't like swapping 5th rounders, but that is not that big) because it gives us a TON of cap room and compensation we wouldn't get if he played this year. Wanny would have settled for the 4th and maybe a 5th, but Saban stuck to his gun and got the 2nd rounder. I am not depressed I am happy.

Why do people keep saying that he's got these terrible knees? He's been very durable throughout his career up till now. Fact is, that complaints about his physical condition started to surface during Wanny's regime and that issue was often discussed in the subject of a contract extension. PS always maintained that he was fine...this may not be true but it's very possible that his knee problems were blown out of proportion by stupid Wanndstedt and Co. because they probably had decided that they were going to try to re-sign him...no matter how old their D was. Wanny and Co. may have had the biggest impact on Pat's diminished trade value. Wanny's decisions are still damaging us.

You of all people I would have expected to not push that "Surtains legs will be amputated" crap.......

How many games has Surtain missed in his career due to his broken down knees?
 
My assessment of the trade:

1. Madison would have been a better choice to trade from a standpoint of ability, but would we have gotten a 2nd for him and since he renegotiated last year, the cap hit would have not made sense.
2. The trade saves close to $6 mil in cap space to sign our draft pics and possibly extend Randy McMike's contract.
3. It also allows us to trade after or during the draft process ( Henry, LJ Shelton, SA, Edge, etc).
4. Having that add'l pick gives us some flexibility and breathing room in the draft.
5. We HAD to make a move with PS. It would have had to happen sooner or later...could we have picked at #2 and still signed someone in our current cap situation...no.
6. As important as all of this is that we do have some depth behind PS. Is that depth the same quality, no way, but we won't be in dire straits because of this trade.

Are there other players I would have rather traded...yea, but this trade made the most sense (or cents, as it were...) It is obvious that PS didn't want to be here (he went with the money...that's not a knock on him, just a fact that I can't blame him for). We needed this pick and PS was probably the one guy we could get the most for and miss the least.
 
Why not give up an aging Sam Madison, who is obviously losing his ability, for a couple of picks. he wouldnt have garnered a 2rd rounder, but why give up the more talented of the two "shut-down" corners we have. Surtain will be missed.
 
Bottom line- can't pay one guy 10% of your cap. That's why we didn't get as much for him, he came with a big price tag of his own.

Because the goal was to reduce cap hit. Madison wouldn't save us anything.
 
I look at it like this....

We drafted Surtain with the 44th pick of the 1998 draft and got 6 good years out of him. Now we trade him at the age of 29 for the 46th pick in the 2005 draft. If anyone knows anything about depreciation you'll know that you can't get a better deal than that.
