MERGED: Dolphins Select Wright in 5th Round

Good news to hear that we got Wrigjht in the 5th, makes it all worthwhile that we didn't have to give up a first day pick. Good move, I like it.

Yes, I agree that our need is more dire then yours, but your telling me that your team takes Wright in the 5th, and your are not happy? This guy like your QB has massive potential, and if he succeeds, you have yourself a star, if not, you lost a 5th round....not that big a deal. Even if Anderson ends up being a superstar, getting Wright would give you a very good backup. If you got this player, you would be ecstatic.
Well now that you put it like that....maybe. I don't know much of Wirght to make any judgements on him which is why I never dissed him. A lazy player (based on reports)would be a project. Something that a cap era cannot afford but you guys had an extra 5th rd. pick to throw. We don't.

I remember reading somewhere that the Fins reps that went to his workout left early and that it wasn't a ploy to make them seem uninterested....It was that they really weren't interested....Sneaky Saban does it again.
Maybe they really weren't interested and thought that some other team would pick him up for a higher draft pick. It wouldn't be surprising if your scouts said "we'll offer our other 5th pick and if not, who cares".

Quick ??

how do you know which pick is late, and which is earlier? I mean, the draft order hasn't been set yet.

Thats an excellent question, I was wondering that myself. But, I think what it could mean is that Miami was the only team that bid on Wright in the 5th round. Unfortunately, that means Miami probably would have gotten Wright had they waited until the 6th round.

I think it's a good move as well especially at DT, BUT

How many rounds are in the supplemental draft?

Couldn't we have just waited a little longer and not had to use any draft pics at all?

We only had ONE fifth round pick. We were picking SECOND in the fith round, which created all the confusion when the story was initially released.

Interesting. If Miami ended up with the 2nd pick in the round, that would be quite the coincidence...would have only about a 25% chance of it happening that way. Weighted lottery and all...

Heres what Saban has to say about Wright:

"We believe we have gotten great value from our supplemental pick by adding a player of Manuel’s talent to our roster at the critical position of defensive line,” Dolphins Head Coach Nick Saban said. “The supplemental draft is different than the regular draft because you can assign a player in advance an exact position in the draft, and we felt fortunate to get Manuel in this slot. Because of his size and speed, he’s got a great deal of potential, and we will work with him to improve consistency in his performance.

“In addition, by taking Manuel now, we’re able to add a young player who we probably wouldn’t be able to get next year at that position in the draft, and it allows us to work with him this season. It’s a positive for the organization to bring in a talented player with a draft choice that affords us great value and at the same time gives us a year’s head start to develop him as a player.”

Great point about drafting him and developing him, while only losing a pick next year. Thats a typical Rick Speilman move. Rick would have drafted all seven eligible Supp. Draft entires, LOL.

The marginal value of a 6th versus 7th (that's what the value comes out to be since this is next year's 5th) is very low. We could have gotten him in the 6th maybe, but it's worth the little increment to make sure (IMO).

As I said: I'm not a huge Wright fan. But it was a 5th round pick, and a damn good value at that spot.

Wright in the 5th

5th round (and the lower of the 2 picks at that)
WHAT A STEAL!

Also keep in mind that we were picking at the begining of the fifth in the Sup Draft - which enabled us to make a bid BEFORE many of the other teams (Phi, Cin, etc). With any luck, we will not be drafting that early again next year (come on Nick!), making this selection that much more worthwhile.

You might want to refer to the other Wright thread that was merged about 6 times.
