MERGED:exactly the reason NOT to take a rb at #2/The Ronnie Contract

you knew how much you were gunna have to pay him when you found out you had the #2 pick. its not a surprise.

no it's not surprise. and neither is the fact that you're still missing the point. when you draft at #2 you do not take a running back for that very reason. the money is better spent in another area less dependent on other players to make him better. that's why with the salary cap and contracts getting out of hand, we haven't seen a rb drafted top 3 since 1995. before the salary cap and before contracts were like they are now.

Robert Gallery was the number two pick last year and he made a mountain of money with a contract of 7 years for $60 million with incentives and signing bonuses of 8 mil last year and 6.5 mil this coming year, I believe. It doesn't matter what position is picked number 1 or 2, they will get the green.

I understand what you're saying in that without an OLine NOBODY is running the ball with any success. But I don't think there was an O lineman talented enough to warrant a #2 overall pick. Do you?

What, are you trying to be the 'niners? And even they picked Alex Smith. Look let's wait to freak out until the following:

1. The contract is signed.
2. Ronnie averages 2 yards a carry in the first half the season.

By the way, I think 1 will happen, and so will 2--if you multiply that by at least 2 or 2.5...

yeah i need to retract my earlier statement about clarett. he probably wont get the carries. at this point though i'd probably still be willing to wager his ypc is right there if not better than brown's and for one reason only; denver has a better o line than we do.

Not take a RB???? Last time i checked we had 7 different RB's last year and we had the 31st worst RUSHING ATTACK....exactly the reason your a freaking moron if u don't take a RB at #2...unless you want your BACKUP FULLBACK(sammy Morris) to carry it again

That isn't his point.

The #2 pick is gonna get paid no matter what...status. How many outstanding LTs are there playing right now? Not many. LT, QB, DE, CB, etc. are positions that are more difficult to fill so the investment has greater value.

yeah and we had ricky in 2003 with 1853 yards and 4.8 ypc and where did that take us? as for last year, you tell me we which current rb in the nfl would have ran for anything behind that swiss cheese o line? IT IS A PASSING LEAGUE NOW. 3 YARDS AND A CLOUD OF DUST NO LONGER = SUPERBOWL. i would have taken the hit and given up the #2 for minny's #7 and #49, as was offered, contrary to saban lying and saying we did not recieve any trade down offers, and gotten either antrel rolle, mike williams or troy williamson with the #7. if i knew boston was coming back, i would replace surtain with that #7 by getting rolle if he was there, carlos rodgers if he wasnt.

when you pick at #2 the guy you pick is supposed to be a DOMINANT player. so good that he is worth the money you pay him.

your saying the RB position is not a position that can benifit from a dominant player, since the RB needs an O-Line.

i say a RB can make a serious improvment to your offense and can be worth the money.

ill site:
T. Barber, L.T., P. Holmes, J. Lewis...

all these players have serious impacts on offense.

Right THECOORDINATOR since you were in the draft war room taking trade offer calls right. Did you speak with Mike Tice, drew Rosenhaus, whom did you speak with????We didnt trade because MINNY did not want to trade, they were happy with taking troy W at 7......you dont think saban wanted to trade down, he would have but no trade offers. And you rip me for saying to get a RB and u want to take a CB at # 7, let me start laughing at you now.......

great news from dolphinsville as ronnie brown and his agent have made it known they want to get PAID. everyone knows as a #2 pick you are going to get a phat deal, but i think brown's agent is asking for an absurd amount. reguardless of what we end up paying him i will tell you this: if our offensive line blocks, then any of the backs we have can be successfull. minor, morris, or harris. if they block like they did last year, brown or anyone else in the backfield is going to struggle to get 3 yards per carry.
this is why i'm against taking a running back with the #2 pick. DBs and WRs are what i think you should take when you are drafting top 5. they dont rely so heavily on other things as other positions do.

If we didn't want to pay too much for the #2 pick, we should have traded down (which we tried but we didn't get what we wanted so we didn't trade) or we could have drafted Nugent with the #2 pick. That is the only way we wouldn't have paid through the nose for that pick. Personally, I feel we made the right choice

If ronnie is the next LT, then he IS worth it.
I hate it when people say RBs arent that important or you can get anyone in there. Ricky made our offense respectable when he was here. (did we win SB? no but it was coaching not ricky)

If ronnie is what they say, we will be very happy. More so than if we drafted a cb.

Let him hold out, I dont' care. I want him fresh for NEXT year (2006). This year is strictly rebuilding. We aren't going anywhere anyway in 2005.

Your optimism overwhelms me. :shakeno:

Listening to Saban's interview with Lebatard, it seemed clear that he would have taken Smith if SF had passed. Saban had Smith rated as a franchise QB (the only one on his board). It's moronic to pass on a franchise QB, if you don't have one regardless of what your rushing attack was ranked last year. RBs are simply less important b/c they are available many places. When you factor in the salary cap, RBs are rarely good value that early in the draft unless you think the guy is just special (I'm talking LT or Dickerson special). Clearly Saban puts Brown in that category.

every area of a football team is dependant... is a WR not dependant on the QB throwing him the ball? is the QB not dependant on the O-line and running game? is the LB not dependant on the DTs and DEs, are the DEs not dependant on the CBs and vica versa...

every position is vital on the football field, we got the best guy in the whole draft period... pay him what he deserves at number 2 and get on with it, its not like its gonna kill our cap...
