Merged: Frerotte/Linehan

Well the new systems are limited. We're not installing a WCO in one year.

the last 6 games, which we won as I'm sure you know, his QBR was 83.5, that's a career high for a 6 game stretch from Gus....much more than I ever expected out of him.....and 8 Td's to two INTs, I'd take every day of the week.

Yes, it was. Largely because of a FANTASTIC game in San Diego with rating of 128.8.

And I see your point... BUT... three of those six games he had a rating in the freaking 60's or less. THREE of the six. So to say that he was "really good" over the last six weeks is inaccurate.

You can say he was really good in three of the last six games and that would be true... and he was awful in three of the last six games.

That's the thing about Gus that nobody really talks about... and this is so rare that it's just boggling...

Gus Ferotte had ONE rating (out of sixteen) between 73 and 92. ONE.

He was almost never "ok" or "decent" or "pretty good". He was pretty much great or godawful. And more often awful than great.

Two.

accuracy- wise, he was same ol' same ol'.....turnover-wise, he wasn't bad in any of the last 6.
Wins are tied to TO's.....Gus is going to be innaccurate at times, but he's not going to kill you with the stupid play...

but how many 70s and 91s did he have

more to the point is, Gus proved to be a serviceable QB who will not kill an offense with stupid mistakes......he wasn't great but, he wasn't complete garbage. We need to upgrade the position but, finding someone to lead the offense better , next year, isn't going to be easy to do.

If we don't change the offense and we work Bagget in as the new OC, I would think Gus's knowledge of the offense would be even more valuable.

agreed

NOPONY, you hit it RIGHT on the nose!!! The link below will show that GUS had 5 games above the 80% mark for passer rating...
http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/1070/gamelogs/2005
These are in order that they were played:

DEN - 96.4
NE - 83.6
OAK - 93.6
SD - 128.8
NE - 92.4

he had 2 games that were just over 70%:

NO - 71.7
TEN - 70.3

He had 2 games in the 60s and all the rest were less.. 2 under 40%!!!

Not once did he cross the 67% completion line!!! And that includes his half games!!! Most were under 40%!!!

Just a thought!!!

See my last post!

Sorry, my bad. The third was a 70.3. Still bad, but not what I said.

Barely completing 50% of your passes for a 6.06 YPA will kill you just as surely as turnovers. And it's not like he was great at TOs. He had his share of INTs.

but how many 70s and 91s did he have

Well, that's not really relevant since those numbers fall squarely in the "bad" and "great" range. None of those are "ok".

But to answer your question... he had NINE games this year with a rating in the 60's or less. NINE. Six of those with rating in the 50's or less.

I think we agree on a lot, but I am less kind to his performance than you are... and I think it would be easy to do better than the 28th ranked QB in the league. I think it would be hard to do much worse. I mean he only has a few rankings to fall.

No Linehan, No Frerotte?

Hopefully now with his boy Linehan gone we will see Frerotte slide down the depth chart to where he belongs. "Lifetime Second Stringer" and get our first real QB since Danny left!!! Forget a QB that won't lose a game I want one that can win a game...

Is it possible that Gus simply underperformed this past year....and if he can produce a avg consistent year that would put him in the 14th - 19th ranked QB and as a team we would be significantly improved in QB play for one more year??

I just think Gus had an off year......well I hope he did.;)

Like i said, Gus is not high on my list at all but, he did better than I thought he would this year. Think about that for a minute..

Rankings aren't anything but comparisons to ther teams' QBs, they don't say much about his effectiveness for our team.......gus is crap, np admitting that but, if he played all season like he did in the last 6 games, we'd have been in the playoffs, no doubt.....that's where we want to be, no matter who is QBing....if we find somebody better, great but, at least with Gus we know we'll have a chance....anything else is icing.

Gus was just barely below his career numbers... consistent with the fact that he is now 34.

There is next to no chance that Gus will suddenly at 35 jump to average.

They could tailor the offense to hide his deficiences and perhaps bump his rating up some... but to the detriment of the team. do things like eliminate medium-length and over the middle passes. they could throw only screens and bombs. Or they could move back to Wanny ball and give it to Ronnie and Ricky 45 times a game.

But it wouldn't take many coaches long to figure out how to beat that.

:)

I think our disagreement is only a matter of degree.

Let's all just hope we can get someone good in here. Go Saban, go!

I don't care if they are a runner or passer as long as Gus has a head set on!!!:dolphins:

IMO I dont think that Linehan is a savior anyway i didnt like his play calling at all until he came from upstairs to the sidelines anyway. I think him coming to the sideline had alot to do with Saban then we had a 6 game winning streak. Either way we have to have a better QB Frerotte will due if we had T.O(without the lip). We could have a awesome dominating Offense without Linehan. Our line is decent we have Ronnie and Ricky (unless we trade him) we have Booker, Chambers, Boston, Welker, and McMichael. Depending on the qb will make a difference. We can have a soft offense run more and then pass and be competitive. We have Saban in his 2nd year not pornstache. Better decisions and aggressive play at the end of games will make a difference.
