merged: great news from PFW/Carey looking different

I think it is best to take a wait and see attitude with Carey....hopefully Hawk can turn him into an O-Lineman that was worthy of a 1st round pick....if he is doing a good job againt JT then that is great news. Our O-line was like swiss cheese last year and Fiedler and Feeley never have time to throw and barely had time to hand the ball off.

Carey looking different

Acccording to ESPN artice:

"Word from South Florida is Dolphins 2004 first-round pick Vernon Carey looks like a different player altogether and has the inside track at the outside left tackle spot ahead of Damion McIntosh. Observers say it's obvious that O-line coach Hudson Houck is pressing the buttons with Carey that Tony Wise didn't in 2004. We hear Carey is in better shape and more confident, and held his own against Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Taylor during spring practice."

IF he can perform at a high level as the LT that would be incredible. Sounds like the acquisition of Houck is already paying off. Holding his own against JT, theres no one better that he will go up against in a game than JT so if he can hold him at bay thats great news.

thats what i like to here about this guy considering we traded up to get him and spent a 1st rounder on him

I really hope Carey can win that spot. He has the physicals tools to do it. If he succeeds, we will have a starting left tackle for years to come.

Correct me if i am wrong, but didnt Smith do good against Taylor in MC? I mean not that i am downing Carey's talent or anything, i'm just not gonna get excited until i see the samething in TC.

no it was the other way, he got domiated by taylor and we´re were all sayin that is no big deal because its almost impossible to handle #99 without pads

Well if Carey is gonna learn to be a good LT then who better to get his drills against than our own JT. Better coaching and opposition in training makes a better drilled and coached player. If its right about Carey then im happy. Lets see him in pads tho so he can really get his teeth cut. With Houck coaching his chances of progression have increased dramatically.

Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember hearing that Taylor was pimp-slapping Wade Smith every other play in mini-camp. The optimism regarding Wade Smith was almost purely coach-driven, and came straight from the top in Dave Wannstedt.

There are many things Wannstedt shouldn't necessarily be blamed for, but he deserves every bit of the blame for the Wade Smith experiment at LT. That man never showed anything positive at the position yet DW kept apologizing for him and talking about how good he's going to be etc etc. If there's one thing on the message board that I can take pride in, it is my CONSISTENT stance regarding Wade Smith...specifically that he's not as good as everyone hopes/thinks. I saw him play one preseason game against Jacksonville...did a big writeup actually (if anyone wants to search for it)...and I couldn't believe how everyone seemed to take a blind eye to the mistakes he was making against Hugh Douglass. People looked at the bottom line, which was that Hugh didn't get any sacks on Smith...but an in-depth look showed that he didn't get any sacks because we mixed up running plays and bootlegs and 3-step drops, with hardly any opportunities whatsoever for deep throws, and plus we had double teams on Douglass. But I saw Smith on numerous occasions get beaten by Douglass. It was a sign of things to come, as Smith would allow something like 14 sacks that season including really important ones.

Then everyone expected Smith to make this herculean leap to being good all the sudden, in one offseason, just because he added a little bulk. To me, leaving the keys to the LT position to Smith was a glaring risk.

How awful is it, in retrospect, that in 2004 we returned only ONE starter to the offensive line, and that starter was WADE SMITH. The sole returner to the lineup SHOULD have been Todd Wade. You know, sometimes we get caught up in these explanations and rationalizations, and we stop looking at the big picture. I know hindsight is 20/20, but we really should have seen last year's dismal failure coming...

Todd Wade was over paid. He was paid by the Texans for what he did during his rookie season, not what he did during the next two.

The thought just struck me that Carey is like our franchise player (or like another teams franchise player that we acquired). We gave up a first and a fourth to get him which is almost like a first and third. It was either that or get stuck with a more talented, mauling DT that would have filled one of our most pressing needs this year. Good thing we dodged that bullet and outsmarted the Patriots, eh? That Rick Spielman sure was a genius. I wonder if we could lure him back for more money?

BTW PFW is a very credible source thats been at work dilligently since 1967. It was founded by the legendary Joel Buschbam.

Incorrect.
Joel Buschbaum was a contributing editor for PFW before his death. He did not found the publication. The founder was Art Arkush who died in 1978, a few months after Joel started working for PFW. Art's son Hub is the publisher now and another son, Dan, is one of the editors.
