MERGED: La Canfora: Gruden is Ross' main target

So he doesnt get credit for winning the Super Bowl with Tampa because he didnt build the team from scratch but Dungy gets credit for winning the Super Bowl with the Colts? Dungy brought in Manning right? So who gets credit for that Raiders Super Bowl team? Gruden has gone deep into the playoffs with 2 different teams.....the Falcons had 11-12 Pro Bowlers last year? You'd think a team with half their starters being Pro Bowlers would be a little better than the Falcons are this year eh?

The Colts were nothing but a pretty good offensive team and overall they were one of the worst teams in the league by wining only 6 games before Dungy came in. They had one of the worst defenses in the league. Jim Mora wasn't a bad coach but he certainly didn't leave with Dungy with the talent that he left Gruden with. The colts were pretty much one of the worst teams in the league that season. Dungy came in and drafted Freeney, Clark, Robert Mathis, Cato June, Bob Sanders, and many other defenders who went to the pro bowl and were pivotal for their Super Bowl run. Did Gruden even do anything remotely close to that? Not in your best day dude. When Gruden was given power to build his team he failed miserably so you can't point out he built that Raiders team. That team was pretty much built by Al Davis himself. If for any reason Dungy wasn't fired that season and he would have faced Dungy in the super bowl then he would have probably lost.

IMO, too much "Fail" sandwiched between his glory years and now. Cowher on the other hand went out a winner on his own terms which resonates with me.

Gruden, the alleged QB guru was the second moron in 05 at the 5 spot who needed a franchise QB to pass on Rodgers and instead stand pat with an already journeyman Brian Griese while drafting Ronnie's fellow part time SEC RB, Cadillac Williams. - unsettlingly eerie, isn't it?

IMO, if Ross hires him, Gruden should rightfully tithe half his income to Tony Dungy. IMportantly, after he was kicked to the curb in Tampa Bay, more than a few disgruntled players threw him under the bus, including Simeon Rice who labeled him a "scumbag." Since JG's a bright guy, and now has the perspective of time and ESPN to reflect on his screwups and shortcomings, hopefully he's learned some humility and how not to make the same mistakes again.

First mistake Gruden made was to sway away Rich McCay. The rest of his mistakes were obvious to those who are true followers of the national football league. Talk about bringing guys like David Boston, freaking Griese, and the rest of his horrible qb selections.

So that could be the reason why he turned Ross down in January because it was a lot more work for the same if not, less pay
I don't want a guy with that attitude. Clearly his heart is more into money then coaching. Ross is too concerned with glitz. Might as well make Fergie the next head coach. Gruden will be a mistake.

What if the attitude was reframed as "I don't think I should've been fired, so I'm gonna make Tampa Bay pay me everything I can."

Would that be such a bad attitude, in terms of the kind of fire you want in your head coach?

Even if that were the case, it only shows the dude is holding a childish grudge. Get over it, grow up and grow a pair.

Either way. I want a guy who wants to coach and wants to win. I'm just afraid that all of the big names being toss around are going to be JJ 2.0. I don't think any of them are willing to put in the time to rebuild a team and go the distance.

Boy... I really didn't see anything new or newsworthy from that clip. Ross hasn't recently talked to Gruden or anything. LaCanfora could've mentioned anyone and did... he threw out the entire kitchen sink on that.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
that's what I was thinking

The Division, twice. In 4 years in Oakland, he never had a season below .500...he took over a 4-12 team and went 8-8, 8-8, 12-4, 10-6. The year after he left the Raiders made the SB...so, either he gets credit for winning with Tampa or he gets credit for the Raiders being there...one or the other...after 2002, the Raiders haven't had a winning season...It's virtually impossible to win there with Al Davis, it's a circus show...and he managed to win the AFC West twice. And the AFC West wasn't the trash division it is now.

This is totally true, he has to get credit for one or the other. I thought that was his superbowl to be honest.

Not true. Al Davis has ALWAYS had say in personnel decisions. Then Gruden went to a Tampa team that was already built for him. I'd look to his drafts and QB reaches to point to Gruden being nothing more than a creation of the media. The fact Tampa finally got a FRANCHISE QB once he was gone and the team rebuilt through a new FO, should bring pause to those clamoring for this media darling.

Hey, Ross... Just hire a coach that a) is not mildly retarded; and b) doesn't fist pump for field goals

k thx bye

Right now Gruden is as good a choice as any. I would prefer Cowher, since his style would be able to use many of the players already here. Gruden would need to sign 4-5 more QB's.

I honestly think that half of the people on this forum don't know the difference between a coach and a GM...

Every time I see someone mention Cowher i cringe. Gruden would be fine by me. I want a young coach with some fire, not an old boring throwback. I would think we could get any coach we wanted if we are picking #1 with Luck out there. Most of these coaches know you can't win without a stud QB. Look how much Billicheat won before he had Brady, and most fans agree Bill is a quality nfl coach.

Funny I think the same thing about Gruden. But fully agree that I would like a young coach with fire rather than a media pumped retread.

Didn't Gruden take Dungy's team and win a Super Bowl with it? If I remember correctly, the years after that Super Bowl run were nothing spectacular. I say Jeff Fisher. I wonder what he could do with someone other than an idiot and a grandfather as a QB.
