Merged: Lj Shelton Released

I don't think we will take a look at shelton, Saban told macIntosh when he worked his contract that he would not sign any free agent LT's. I don't know if he is the underhanded type or not, but it wouldn't be a good way to start off his coaching career by lying to his players, before his first trainning camp begins, I think he would want his players to trust him.

I'm not that sure that he said this to MacI Why would he? To resign him?
He already signed a FA (McDougle) and drafted a tackle (Alabi) after that was in a newspaper...

If Shelton could be had for a reasonalbe price - I'm all for it

Well, it took until the 5th page of this thread, but I finally found somebody who remembered this. If I recall correctly, McIntosh restructured his contract and took a serious pay hit based on Saban's promise that he not sign any free agent LT's or drafting anybody at LT. He would be allowed to compete with anybody else on the team (like Vernon Carey) but wouldn't have to contend with a big name free agent or draft pick. Helps him by allowing him to play, and helps us by saving considerable cap space.

The most important thing here is that it would be very, very bad to start off your first season by lying to your players.

If the price is right, we should get him, dump D-Mac or Wade Smith, and prevent the Bills from getting him. But we need money for a potential starting CB, veteran FS, and run-plugging DT also.

I guess you forgot the stipulation in D-Mac's contract when we re-signed him. We are not allowed to sign any free agent LT's this season. Signing Shelton is a pipe dream. :infins:

A lot of people were saying that about Kendall last season- and not signing him was a huge mistake. Hes a good player, and played well for the Jets.

That's a good point. I would, however, note that Kendall was (I believe) cut because of injury concerns, whereas I think Shelton was cut because he couldn't crack Green's lineup. However, you're right in that I put too much stock in Green's judgment.

Bump to answer this question! Does he go through waivers?

I don't think so. I'm almost certain that waivers are only during the season. Think about June 1 cuts; they don't go through waivers, they're free agents.

I highly doubt that there is language in D-Mac's contract that states that Miami cannot sign another free-agent LT. That may have been discussed by Saban and D-Mac's agent but I can't imagine that NS would handcuff himself like that. That being said, "signing Shelton is a pipe dream" may not be that far from the truth....it all comes down to $$$ & there has to be a few teams out there that will ante up and take a shot at a young LT.

As much as I hate to agree with a Jills fan, they come out smelling like a rose if they sign Shelton. Now they get him free and could use Henry to get more players/picks. Maybe in a package deal for T.O. since it seems the eagles are heading for an impasse and a bitter hol;dout possibly forcing a trade. Bills could use a T.O. opposite Moulds, tho I think Evans is a very good wr.

Wow talking up the Jills,............ that hurt!
No way the bills go for TO. He's a head case . Not Donahoe's type of player If he can blast his vet qb guess what he'll do to JP? I doubt the bills can afford him anyways. In a few years, JP ,Evans and Willis will command a bigger contract.

:shakeno: The Bills NOR Eagles are making this trade. Jeez, the Eagles could have picked up Henry awhile back for their 3rd rounder, Andy Reid wouldnt budge. Even with TO causing problems, the Eagles are not going to trade him for a RB who might be released that they can get for a 3rd rounder.

He wont holdout, it will cost him 5 million bucks..... Plus the Bills dont have the cap room to take on his contract and they are fine at WR.

and i remember people calling the bills GM a fool for not taking the deal with the cardinals. :D

so is there something wrong with shelton other than his contract?

they just cut there other OT, A. Clement (signed with denver), who many say was not to bad eather.

but from what i read, shelton wasnt that great, but still better than McIntosh.

L.J. Shelton:
2004,
games started: 9
penalties: 5 (2 false starts, 1 holding)
sacks allowed: 4

compare that to Damion McIntosh,
2004,
games started: 14
penalties: 10 (9 false starts)
sacks allowed: 8.75

compare that to Stockar McDougle,
2004,
games started: 16
penalties: 6 (3 false starts, 3 holding)
sacks allowed: 4

I think Houck can make the decision on this one. I personally think we have enough young talent for the oline. It just needs some good coaching and some time to gel. Plus, as been said, I don't think you want to start out lying to your players. Give McIntosh a year to prove himself. You have to take some gambles in the NFL. This is one that may not be so bad. He should be healthy so can't be any worse than last year. With better coaching, hopefully he'll produce. OR at least not suck.

WE REALLY need a DT. Neither Chester or Bowens are locks for being there all year. PLUS Saban loves to rotate dlinemen. I am not crazy about traylor, but I think he would be good for a 1 or 2 year deal. Or look at June 1 cuts.

Saban has been known to develop secondaries. I don't feel quite as concerned right now. For whatever reason I think the secondary will be fine.

IN short, get Traylor. Then look at June 1 cuts if anyone else really stands out.

Shelton has been very up and down production wise... as recently as 2002 he gave up 9 plus sacks... last year he gave up over 4 in starting 9 games and playing in 12.... his penalty avarage is around 5 per season with most being false starts (concentration). His stats don't say he is any better than what we have... on film it might be different.

He is big and young... the way Houck likes them.... we'll just have to see
