Yes you are right.Much ado about nothing.Football can be compared to war.You use your best weapons to take advantage of your opponent weaknesses.You throw a bomb to devastate his defenses.The game plans are similar to war plans in structure.You use strategy to win.The analogies are hard to get away from.BTW I am an ex military man and the analogy didnt bother me.

Well this article isn't a major suprise...it was weak, like many Skolnick articles. He manages it inject his politics into an article about Nick Saban & the Miami Dolphins.

We all need to tread lightly around good 'ol Ethan it would appear....any mention of "war", even as innocently as Saban's statements were could set the little guy off.

Just run a Google search for "Ethan Skolnick" and War and you'll know where he stands....the first item that pops up is a petitition to impeach the President signed by...you guessed it...Ethan Skolnick.

This isn't a political forum & it shouldn't be....but Ethan's article isn't a political forum either so I'm not interested in reading his political views. I can barely stand his views on sports.

Saban was just drawing an analogy for crying out loud. Skolnick, as usual, comes across like the little whiner that he is.

Why stop at Saban? What about those terrible folks at ESPN and NFL Network showing all of the "war rooms" this weekend? How dare they use the term "war" for a draft strategy room!

What I find really funny is that I'm sure Ethan thought nothing of the analogy but wants to create a stir.

I absolutely hate journalists sometimes. The same thing happened with Randy Moss and the "mooning." Give me a break. I'm not the biggest Randy Moss fan but that was innocent humor. Had he taken out a pretend machete and hacked up a teammate pretending to be an opponent, it would have been deserved.

It's like these guys just lie in wait for the right moment to throw a hissy fit. I can't respect that.

I think you buried the lead. Primarily because Skolnick did a remarkable job of accomplishing that himself. Buried in "post draft observations" was his estimation Frerotte has a 60% chance at the starting QB position, compared to 35% for Feeley and 5% for Sage. Frankly, I think it was pathetic journalism, unless Ethan plans a more thorough examination in a forthcoming column. You don't matter-of-factly declare nearly a 2/1 advantage in the incoming challenger's favor without related quotes or specifics in regard to style of play, or anything other than "comfort in Linehan's system."

Saban sure didn't offend me at all. Not sure how Ethan came to that conclusion that his usage of war analogies were offensive in the first place.

I personally hate the war analogies. I understand Saban's point and frankly wouldn't write an article about it, but the war analogies bother me. I think it is time to find a new one. People die and are mamed and lose their children in wars. Football is a game where people make a lot of money. Again, I understand the point and am not bashing Saban in any way, but I do wish he'd come up with a new analogy.

This is a pet peeve of mine. The second we start clamping down on our own language, the second our freedom as a society starts to erode.

War metaphors have been used for nearly as long as there have been wars. And in our world, someone is always at war. Is it less offensive to use a war analogy when we are fortunate enough not to be one of the countries at war at a given moment?

NONSENSE. As a writer, I will fight to my last breath to preserve my language and continue to trust in my readers to be able to recognize metaphor for what it is.

Here's the point: war is a universal theme, and thus, makes a good source of metaphor. Now, if Saban had said something like: "We really feel like we're the insurgents in the AFC East here. Everyone loves the Patriots, but we have to topple their regime," then yes ... that would have inappropriate. But the only one who took it that far was Ethan.
