MERGED: Skolnick knocks Saban for using the "war" term

I just read the article and found it horribly stupid. What a halfass job by Skolnick, he can do much better.

Football is a sport pretty much based on war strategy.

You have a Field General, who's job is to command his troops into enemy territory. In the process he throws long bombs. While tanks on the others side try to pummel him. The enemy often blitzes (taken from blitzekrieg, German term for lightning war)

Skolnick is being dumb with this article.. He should go cover badmitton or something if he doesnt like war analogies.

Hey Skape, Great job with the sig pic. The yelloiwsh "23" kinda gives the whole thing a KC look though. I'm sure you played around with it and that was the best alternative.

I'm not done.

I wonder if Ethan has at one point or another referred to a "locker room cancer," and if he thinks THAT metaphor is offensive?

That is an EXCELLENT point.

eheh It becomes yellow because its translucent.. It stood out too much as white. the 23 is a take on the UPS shield that ronnie had on his official site.. The reast I did. Anyway thanks. Ill be making the rest of our rookies in Dolphins uniforms shortly, Ronnie's was easiest to do since Auburn's uni's are similar to Miami's.

I'm sure that Saban was in no way attempting to belittle our troops (or that for any nation at any time) when he made his "war" comment. Skolnick reached too far, IMO, as he often does. He really needs to change his style of writing (be more focused, concrete and justify his arguments more).

What Saban probably meant was that in his profession, one must be very disciplined, organized, have a firm but adaptable/insightful strategy, productively react to unforseen disasters, draw X's and O's for game day, inspire his players, make tough decisions, etc. Some or all of these skills are mirrored in military leaders. It's still wrong to compare the "wars" of sports to R/L wars but I understand it when pro-sports people talk about their "wars." It's a struggle but it's played out in a completely different field. It's going to take time for sports people to adapt to this new politically correct (or incorrect) notion/term that sports shouldn't be connected to war.

Yea, I agree with Boomer in that Ethan is going to have a much harder time justifying an interview with Saban and the Dolphins if he keeps writing this stuff.

As long as he doesn't call the patriots terrorist or the enemy of america or people who want to kill americans, then i'm pretty sure i can infer the differences inwhat peole mean.

my brother has serverd 2 tours in Iraq and all sorts of other crap too, he and i are not offended or feel disrespected when people make refrence to war and sports

how come every journalist in south florida just a bout bashes everyting miami does,

Because predictability breeds contempt. Because Saban has shut them out so they are going to have to do real work such as find contacts, research stories, rather than making up a load of stuff from the pressers hot off the fax machine, or whilst they are sitting eating donuts in the Journos room at Davie.

Its everywhere, every town, every sport. Americans (Self included) thrive on contoversy be it minimal stuff such as local sports or the fighting of wars. If I fill the newspaper full of good deeds and happy horse-****e then sales drop. I put in drama, drugs, negative opinioins sales go up. This is nothing new. Not to mention a fight we have way too often on this board. If you have complaints e-mail ethan or his editor but complaining about it here does no good (execpt to add unneeded drama)

I'm sorry Crunch and this is no way directed at you - you're a good guy and a good poster - but people need to seperate the word "war" when used in sports and the word "war" to descibe conflict. Anyone who starts whining about how it's disrespectful should get some sugar for their high horse.

Again not in any way meant at you Crunch, just a general comment.

being as though war is the highest level of combat....i agree with using the term, what goes on on the field is a WAR not a game of tidly winks, the draft has been called the war room for superior strategizing when getting the man u want...and those are the two aspects of war strategy and all out battle...i have nothing against it...Skolnick can stroke his d*** to another tune

First time poster here even though I've been viewing for a while. Even though I'm still a youngin', I'm also a sportswriter and have the good fortune to have a column in my school paper. As a columnist, you're not always trying to get people to agree with you. You're trying to elicit a reaction and force people to make their own opinion. So if Ethan is reading this thread, he's considering his mission accomplished, because you guys are definitely having a strong reaction while reading his column.
