MERGED: Skolnick knocks Saban for using the "war" term

I will add that I generally don't have trouble with Ethan's stuff -- particularly in comparison to some other writers.

This is definitely an issue that gets to people, though, and this is the point of writing a column. It's just like when the entire nation is up in arms over a bad/risque/insensitive commercial...it still gets the job done because people are talking about whatever company made the commercial. You may not agree with Skolnick, but you're talking about his piece, reading his paper, and reacting to his opinion. By the way, thanks for the greetings and I agree that the war analogy is no big deal. It's just that in the same way that a lot of you think that Skolnick is using an agenda to censor Saban, you guys are using your opinion to try to censor Skolnick...if that makes sense :)

I sent this to him

o: Skolnick, Ethan
Subject: War analogy

Ethan. Sorry but only dopes like you get upset over things like this. Stop whining. There is not one person I know that would be offended by a football coach using a war or battle analogy. It has been going on forever. Next time some General uses a football analogy would you lambaste him for making light of the war? On the other hand these same people I know including myself absolutely know the seriousness of what our soldiers are
doing in Iraq. Just whiney people let things like this bother them & try
to make an issue out of them & these whiney people including yourself should be held to account for comparing the NFL draft to the battle in Fallujah.
I'm sorry I even read it.

He responded:

hanks for the e-mail.

You seem to be in the majority today, though "dopes" was a nice touch.

Anyway, I respect your view on this.

Ethan

Seeme alot of people have e-mailed him today.

And Dr. Astrozoom, proselytizing has no place in a sports article, no doubt about that. In the same way that Tom Lee called the Marlins "terrorists" in their negotiations for a new stadium, there has to be some discretion used. This column is simply the writer's opinion and yes, he does get paid to offer his opinion. Also, judging by the e-mail that Emskirch sent him and the response he got, he's not running away from the criticism. I talked to Joe Henderson of the Tampa Tribune a few weeks ago and he said a good writer always stands up to what he says. So I commend Skolnick for that.

I dont see the big deal with using war analogies to explain something. War is real and it is always going to be around. If SAban used are car accident as an example Scholnic wouldnt have said anything and those kill more people every year than wars do. I hate people that complain. Focus on the more pressing issues, not what some coach uses as an analogy at a post draft, pre season press conference.

It was a very petty article. That said, we've all seen much worse, unfortunately.

 That thar's a big word!

He has a right to express his opinion. I don't think anyone wants to censor him. I'm just saying he's wrong.

Haha, if I'm gonna spend my time here, I'm gonna at least sharpen my skills of the English language while I work my way up to your status, Doc.

Well spoken, grasshopper.

your saying you disagree with his opinion not that he or you is wrong ;)

I agree with him as is shown by the email I wrote him after reading his article:

Ethan,
Thank you very much for the article criticizing Saban's comparisons
of the draft to war. It is really ridiculous how people even place
these in the same sentence. Football players are rich talented athletes
living out a dream in which the worst part is they get a bruised body
and have to take it easy in their big homes and fancy living. Soldiers
are underpaid usually poor people living out a nightmare in which death
is sometimes the desirable alternative compared to what their life
could be after the war. Thank you.

:shakeno:

No, pilot, according to Dr. Astrozoom, Skolnick's opinion IS wrong!
:roflmao:

I'm sick of this political correctness by someone who has a vandetta ag Mr. Saban(why else only single out him?)...oh wait, I used the word sick as an analogy. I guess I must think disease and death are swell  :shakeno:

This PC rant has less validity than the proposed removal of Indian nickname for teams. At least they have some kind of org to push ag the use of Indian nicknames. Where's the coalition of military men begging for the end of these disrespectful analogies? Maybe their are none because nobody is offended but wannabe political commentator Skolnick.

Again, why go after only Saban? All the commentators, coaches, talking heads, etc use these analogies. They have become apart of the game. Besides, after this will the phrase "handicap" be taken out of golf? Will we stop using the word "slaughter" to not offend vegans. Mr. Skolnick has proven himself to be a little man on a high horse.
