I'd like to thank Ethan for pointing out how offensive (is that a war word?) Saban was being. Somehow I made it all the way through Saban's post draft PC without being upset by his war analogy. It's good to have people in the press who painstakingly report on the important things that we sometimes miss. I mean, I might have totally over looked this colossal news story if it weren't for Ethan.

I'd rather be more direct with my sarcasm Infins. That story, I mean editorial, was a bunch of dribble. What an amature. Then he closes with some pointlesss facts that have nothing to do with his preceding dribble. I was about to email him but decided to take the high road and keep it shut.

Sports isn't a war, but, it is about competeing at the highest level...."War" is an appropriate adjective.

Looking out a gunner's port and seeing people cook is a war......Watching people on tv, is an event but, I understand how they say it,a nd, don't take offense.

I'm sure Ethan is an educated boy but he should know that war has a few definitions, including: an active struggle between competing entities. That's exactly what the draft is, is it not?

When I read this article I couldn't believe it. He is usually one of the better writers in South Florida. I just don't see how someone could actually write an article on this. By the comments of people on this board who are/have been in the military and people I know in the military, these kinds of metaphors don't seem to offend anyone. There are similarities between war and football, obviously they are not the same, but someone should not be ripped in a newspaper article for making comparisons to war that are made by many other people. In this circumstance Ethan needs to come down off his high horse, and lighten up a bit.

The article title was way over the top and personal. The article has some valid points, but is not appropriate for the sports section and pretty much unnecessary all the way around. I am not offended by what Saban said and also often use war terminology and sometimes also make war anologies.

That being said, I appreciate Jason Taylor's approach. I believe some NFL players and also coaches sometimes go overboard and like to envision themselves and even promote themselves as warriors and generals when they are simply athletes and entertainers playing a game. Athletes are overpaid and in the spotlight and have almost no risk of life and death (at least little more than any other occupation), while soldiers are the exact opposite. If they all spent some time with deployed soldiers they would probably tone the language down not because its offensive, but because it is not earned.
