Miami Dolphins coach Joe Philbin not fazed by players’ criticism

Only on this website do things like eye-contact become such a big topic. We have the weirdest fans in the NFL to say the least.

It's not weird at all. Joe Philbin is supposed to be the leader of grown men. The capacity to which he handles that responsibility should always be in question until he's proven he can micro-manage all these different personalities. He is after all only a first year head coach for the Dolphins .... and I'm someone who was on board with him 100% ever since the day we fired Tony The Turtle.

Fact is when you're dealing with players, particularly ones you want to fall in line, HOW you deliver the message is crucial. That involves a lot of different aspects, including how you speak with them.

so Dansby and Smith dont like the move... Just wait till its your turn.

He should just hold up his SB ring next to their 2011 6-10 turd of a season and tell them to STFU. Wait, he doesn't need to.

I think Philbin is a pretty smart guy and while it is possible that he is somewhat introverted, I think it is also very likely to be a teaching/mentoring type coach. Not all coaches/leaders need to be screamers, etc.

I worked for a few Colonels that had that hard ass look down at you and scream approach and only a few of them earned respect ... the rest just demanded it. I've also had a couple that were mentoring type leaders; two of those stand out as people I would easily have taken bullets for. Just my two cents ...

It is the guy's first training camp, first preseason as head coach. He is trying to teach his players in a REBUILDING year, rebuilding not retooling, this season is about teaching and it will be a miracle if we win 6 games. Let them screw up on real games and if Philbin isn't grabbing their facemask and telling them about what a fatass they are like Saban did to Manny Wright, then come here and bitch and moan about "eye contact".

Dave Wannstedt has 2 SB rings and a college national championship ring. We all know how much respect he commands.

DISCLAIMER: I am neither in the boat that thinks Philbin is the next Cam Cameron or the next Bill Walsh(yeah I saw that thread), just waiting and seeing.

I have noticed most people don't like others opinions on this site. But I can understand your point of view in this perspective. However I can respectably disagree. I feel Philbin is handling everything masterfully and with no hesitation. He said his behavior could jeopardize his spot on the team and it did. When I see Philbin talking and looking down or away from the person, I see someone that is trying is hardest to make the other person understand what he is trying to say. I don't think this will be a long term thing. I feel once he has his team and every player in that locker room finaly trusts him (which they don't), he will stare into their souls. You have to understand the type of atmosphere that is in that building. Miami has been through a lot of weird things and most of them were sudden. No one is used to anything ATM and anything can change since it always has in the passed. No one really has their feet on the ground. And on top of that they have cameras everywhere. Philbin is choosing his words carefully. If he says one wrong thing the media will rip him to shreds. He will be fine.

Hey thanks, I can appreciate differing opinions and to be honest I hope I'm wrong. I do agree that he can improve and I think his actions and the ends are more important than the means. I agree with how he handled Johnson 100%. My only concern is if he doesn't improve, the respect he has in the locker room will not survive tough situations the team will encounter.

Winning cures all though let's hope that happens soon and often!!

Go Phins!

When did this conversation become about screaming at a player?

eye contact aside, i think these 1 on 1's he has with the players about conduct, respect, etc. should be done in a more serious tone, perhaps in his office, not on the sidelines like idle chit chat

Interview for a job and "instructing" a player are two completely different things. Even in that picture he brings attention to himself and Dansby...how much more so would that be if he were face-to-face, not looking at practice, talking to Dansby. It would look, to me at least, as if he was laying into him regardless of the volume of his voice. IMO, looking at him directly while telling him whatever it is he's telling him would come across as the coach challenging him in a disrespectful manner and that's the message he would be sending the whole team. I don't think, as a new coach or a veteran coach, that's the tone you want to set especially with a guy that's viewed as a leader in the locker room.

Everyone has their own way of doing things. Some people would rather he stand up on a ladder, look down on the player, scream his head off in a cussing tirade and maybe throw a few things to get his point across and make sure everyone knows not to mess with him. Personally I don't respond to that...I served over 9 years in the Navy and had a lot different officers and division leading petty officers I served under, a lot of different styles. I had to follow orders regardless but guys like Philbin and his style were the guys I put the extra effort into doing my job. Those were the guys I didn't want to let down. To each his own I suppose.

Exactly. To me it looks like Philbin is simply having a chat with Dansby. He doesn't have to publicly chastise him, or belittle him. Just. A quiet chat about how things are and why things are done. To me it looks like Dansby is in thought and appreciates have the opportunity to talk to the coach.

Lets not get so caught up in eye contact. As mentioned above it is challenging, and not constructive. Philbin has been around the game too long to not have the balls to talk to his players. Also, talking on the field on front of the other players and not isolating it to his office also speaks volumes. Says that he is always open to discussion andwill always make himself available to their concerns.

Jusdgung by Dansby's comments post practice... He got the message. If so, who cares what we think?

Who said anything about publicly chastizing or belittling?

Lmao. Did this thread just turn into an eye contact discussion? This forum never surprises me

I tell ya, the lack of eye contact again in that picture has me concerned. I know many don't think its a big deal but think of it this way: When he interviewed for the job, do you think he was staring at the ground when speaking?

Hopefully it doesn't mean anything but when I've had sit downs with bosses in the past, the good ones were more engaging to convey their message than what I'm seeing with Philbin.
Look at the picture - they are both looking down and in the same general direction.

Are you aware that there is a technique taught where you deliberately stand side-by-side and don't look into the eyes to encourage a collaborative rather than a confrontational relationship during the conversation?

I wouldn't assume that lack of eye contact means anything without knowing Coach Philbin's intent.
