Miami Dolphins don’t want Ryan Tannehill as a ‘running quarterback'

thats fine if they dont want him to be rushing QB but if the pocket is breaking down and he has open running lanes it would tremedously stiupid not to take them

Tennehill has been sacked and hit more than any other QB...not sure staying still in the pocket is really protecting him. I don't want him to be a running QB, but I would like to see them use his athletic ability to get him out of the pocket some. He is one of the best QB's in the NFL while throwing on the move, let him do it.
If the coaches prefer him staying in the pocket as long as possible, it's not just about protecting him better. It's about wisely developing his primary threat to its potential quickly. That would be his ability to evade in the pocket, read the defense and pass effectively FROM the pocket. They don't want RT to think scrambling to run is a preferred means of evasion. They want him to properly exhaust other options and only then to run, as the most effective pocket passers in history have.

Think Fran Tarkenton; a perfect example of a pocket passer who knew how and when to use his God given ability to evade and run. Tarkenton rarely chose to run first or had a play called for him to run from the start. He had a long and effective career and is in the HOF because of that.

That was your interpretation of that article and interview? It's quite clear that they are saying they aren't running run-designed plays for him, nowhere do they infer, even a little bit, that he should stay in the pocket as much as possible. They just don't want to give him designed runs.

I am a huge Tannehill supporter and very optimistic on him, but some of the sacks he takes - some of which are on him (at least 1 a game), are NOT because the coaching staff is telling him to sit in the pocket.

That was your interpretation of that article and interview?I'm glad you have it all figured out. They have run-designed plays for Ryan. They are using them a bare minimum and rightly so.Having an athletic QB like Ryan there has to be a decent amount of coaching to keep him from putting his head down and taking off.Especially with the first half of the season Oline.I give Ryan a ton of credit for sitting in that unstable pocket.

They dont want him to be a run first pass second QB and no kidding some of the sacks are on him...it's part of a young QB learning.

There is no one simple answer on the sacks taken.I saw a handful that we're on the young QB not using check downs trying too hard to go long ball. While several fans here are yelling deep balls, deep balls,Wallace,Wallace,I was yelling check downs, check downs.I knew as soon as he started taking what the defenses were giving him and the Oline settled down we'd get results like the past 4 weeks.

I think these guys might be taking a brilliant approach to LONG TERM success. They might be developing Tannehill into a special player. Im hoping it works out.

Also, FWIW, once the playoffs start, they could turn Tannehill loose and tell him run when you want and defenses wont know what hit them. Could be a stunner that carries us to something special.

While developing Tannehill the right way may have cost us some wins early, it could pay off big in the future. This could explain some of those unnecessary sacks he took early in the year. Just learning. He has done a much better job in recent weeks avoiding pressure. This kid could turn out to be our Aaron Rodgers yet. I hope so.

I would agree with many that the Pitt game was probably the best balance between called runs for the QB, natural scrambles, and pocket passing. It's great that we want to develop THill to read defenses correctly. But he is getting hit a lot this year, and while the offensive line play is to blame for many of those hits, I think THill holds the ball sometimes, and drops his eyes to look at the rush too often.

As far as the Skins ruining RG3 with the way they played him, I am of the opinion that they played him in the only way they could possibly have success. He was never going to be a drop back 3+ read type guy. He is best in a simplistic passing game predicated on the space created by the run threat he creates. Unfortunately for him, his body could not hold up to the beating of getting pounded by dudes twice his size and almost as fast.

The issue with RG3 IMO is that he clearly was not ready physically and they went with him... at least initially. The other thing worth mentioning is that despite the run they went on, their WRs just aren't that good. Now the bigger issue with RG3 it turns out is that he does have a fairly big ego (which most didn't know about) and he doesn't take criticism well (Santana Moss called him out on deflecting blame). Now some guys grow out of it. I remember Cam Newton getting a lot of crap last year for not being a leader and sulking, but he's made strides this year. Michael Vick didn't (always laughed at reporters when they asked when he was going to work on his reads and accuracy) Vince Young didn't (same thing plus a lot dumber).

I think some are making a big deal out of nothing. The Seahawks have stopped calling as many designed runs for Wilson. The 9ers did for Kaep for awhile but he struggled so they've gone back. When Cam regressed a bit last year it was because Chud tried to make the base offense a Zone Read.

If true this is stupid. I understand when you have a Peyton Manning or Tom Brady that can't run for **** but when you have a QB that runs in the 4.5s you need to use bootlegs, qb reads, etc. Now I am not saying turn into the redskins, Panthers or 49ers but run once in a while. Make them respect his running abilities. Like Rodgers.

By not running at will, Tannehill will become a better pocket passer (Name the last SB winning athletic QB that ran at will), and it will keep him healthier...I have no problem with that.

Luck isn't either but uses it when need be or to escape trouble. You don't necessarily need to run the ball but use his running ability on bootlegs. Tannehill doesn't need to take more hits then he already is by getting sacked and hit. Thought Tannehill used his legs well on the big play and got a first on 3rd down I believe. Your running ability becomes more dangerous if the defense respects your ability to be a pocket passer.

It's a mindset people.. they aren't saying don't take advantage of your legs ever. They are saying they want him to go through his reads and not rely on the run too quick. Much like RGIII or a plethora of other "running QBs" who often run when they shouldn't.

And it's a good move by our staff. I don't want a QB who sees his first read covered and just decides to run. I want a QB that can pick apart the opponents D and run only when it is a must.

So true. Hope that dinosaur Sherman is not OC next year.
