Just seems the NFL is doing everything (and everything extreme) to prevent a lawsuit against them...
The NFL is one of the most guarded brands in the American economy. With a product as volatile as crude oil pumping into virgin waters, they have developed a PR strategy that embraces it's constituents, supporters and fans while aggressively destroying anything that poses a threat to it. The NFL's playbook is to go nuclear at any sign of a threat. Goodell was molded into a disciple of this approach and has been very heavy handed since his appointment. As long as the NFL appears competent in handling it's own problems in house, they can keep everyone else outside on the porch.
The NFL is a brand juggernaut. Goodell's job is to protect the brand at all cost.
As the NCAA is about to find out, when your ship leaks you allow it to sink. Labor unions will forever change the landscape of college and professional athletics. All because they never truly embraced the lessons of SMU and other scandals that brought "pay for play" to the forefront of college athletics. Instead of getting out ahead of the problem, they ignored it.
Goodell won't be caught off guard with anything. Nuclear deterrence is a great weapon to have in the closet.
