Miami Right Guards In Focus

Also, not to burst any bubbles, but Dallas does not have an NFL-caliber defense because of the injuries and key FA loss. The fact that our starting offense did not put at least 17 on the board is a VERY BAD sign. New England will Crush us week one if no personnel moves are made. Their D-line looks SICK right now. Wilfork and Chandler Jones will destroy our back-up center and Juwan James in all probability.
I seriously hope I'm wrong about this.

Better O line than last year when we beat them so...

oh my, those videos make me want to puke. I think the Dolphins should alternate both Smith and Thomas at RG, maybe Garner too. By doing so, you keep fresh legs out there. So on 3rd down when Chubby DT is slowing down, you put in a fresh...say...Garner, and it should be easier. Hopefully the other backups get looked at too, I think anything will do right about now

No question our guards ATM are well real bad, but what we really need to worry about is our run defense. Strong running teams are going to destroy us.

I've made this point before but I think an integral part to the decision process will be who is more effective in the uptempo offense we plan on running, the uptempo offense we haven't seen yet.

Maybe someone will get cut that is an upgrade. Some team looking for a cap savings. Could still happen. I'm sure Hickey will be all over this.

LG is finesse guard, a superior athlete not necessarily a mauler, When Pouncey was drafted they're was talk he'd play LG due to his superior athleticism.
RG is a mauler, pure power with a nasty attitude.

Why in the hell did Philbin hand pick a career LG when he knew he'd be starting a rookie RT and his only options at RG include a second year project and career backup?

They hardly gameplanned and bet your bottom dollar they showed very little of their cards. I think they wanted to run the ball and try a few things. I'm not overly concerned at all. I'm just pleased at what I saw out of Moreno. Bring on the Pats.

I think Shelley will be fine. He holds his own most of the time and doesnt whiff in pass blocking. All guards are going to get beat by someone during the game. Even the top guards in the game. We cant survive this season with what Thomas brings. His college tape was bad and his nfl tape is atrocious.

Right, by knocking Shelley 5 yards backwards.

That was not the only time. On Moreno's long run in the 1st, it was also because Smith got knocked 4 yards into the backfield, which opened up a hole for him. The funny thing was listening to these moron announcers praising him on the play for opening the hole. I wonder how many idiots out there believed it too!

Go back and look at the game and watch Smith specifically on every play, then get back to me. Smith is a joke as run blocker, and will be a major problem for this team if not replaced.

After re-watching the first half. Shelley starts off slow. Gets blown up first play even though its a gain, 2nd play he misses a block at the 2nd level a gain as well on the outside run. On the 19 yard run he does get pushed back but also moves his man out of the hole, you can call it a bad block but he uses the DLman's momentum to get him where he wanted him, not in the hole. On the 2 yard loss, he totally whiffed on the block. After the tough start he really seems to get a handle on his man. Also Thomas in the first half had some pretty good run blocking as well.

The biggest thing about either guard is the pass blocking. Thomas gives up the one pressure on a spin move. Smith seemed quite solid thru out the first half.

Smith really had 3 bad blocks on 10 run plays. Smith only was in on about 6 run plays all which didn't look that bad. All in all I think PFF stinks and pick two bad plays. SMith didn't play horrible and was responsible for one negative play in the half. Thomas' one negative play was the one pressure.
