MIAMI'S Draft From A Scouts Eyes

Those that know me and been around for a few years know the story already. So like other years I spoke with my buddy yesterday as he was in town for the Pat's meetings and the draft. Like always we talk shop on players and the draft and I pick his mind on the players that Miami draft.

Jones -(DID NOT WATCH FILM ON THIS PLAYER - FEELING AROUND NE) NOT A REACH. No he was not one of the KNOWN top tackles in the draft but the drop off from him to the "top" guys is not as steep as people will lead you believe. The kid is a 4 year started in the SEC. Plain and simple. He needs to get much stronger, and he may look like a liability early in the season but one he gets use to the speed of the game and understands he will be solid. Day 1 starter and long time fix to Miami's o-line. Very Good pick not just becasue Miami is in need of O-line men either. Nothing flashy or special about the kid just a good player and will be good in the NFL.

Landry - Best Hands in the draft. He slow yes but he makes up for it with hear/smarts/ brain. Crazy to watch him on tape. "I watched 4-5 games on him" and you watch him and he impresses you. Everything is 100%. Every snap every down. all out player that regardless of his speed he will get separation and will get open. Fights for the ball and catches everything near him. "I personaly had him as a top 5 WR" just on his ablity to get open and for being dependable. There are some scouts that say his lack of speed will hold him back in the NFL and then there are others that say his speed is not a factor. Time will tell on him but my buddies belief is that the guy will be effective and somebody is taking a seat in Miami to him as a slot player. Best player Miami drafted.

Turner (DID NOT WATCH FILM ON HIM) what he hear is the kid has everything to make him a solid pro. Needs some coaching and need to measure his level of competiton. But as far as drill wise he has everythign you want to see out of a NFL gaurd.

Aikens - (WATCHED FILM) - another good pick. Depends on what Miami does with him this is a good pick. Best in man / press coverage. NOT SCARED - will attempt to make a play on the ball. very confident in his ability. Will take chances as well becasue of he believes he can make a play all the time. Bigger corner that will get physical with WR. won't back down. needs to play much smarted. Jumps off the film at you becasue he is always around the ball. needs to sharpen a lot up with tech and foot work. Good change direction good awarness. A good corner. not NFL starter but could make some plays for you in some form of pressure package on 3rd and long. "I like the kid - good attitude will work and wants to be better." Cna see him as a solid pro for a few years. Maybe make a living as a 3rd corner in the NFL.

Hazel - he thought was interesting. Not sure what he is. Flashes some ability but nothing to make him say he would be a pro.

None of the other players he watched.

Just passing along the info as I got it.

We talked about a lot of other players too. won't put here but it was interesting what he thought about the Pa't draft.

So far my buddy has been right on with his insight go back and check the past few years post.

HEwas right on

Hartline
Clay
reshard Jones
Egnew
Vernon

Dead wrong on
Martin
a WR from USC we had a few years back (can't remember his name)
Carrol - Well he felt that Carrol would be a player for us - he does and he is a decent corner but my buddy kind of made me believe he would be much better.

Jury still out on Lamar Miller- he says he won't be a player. I think he flashes. we will see but so far he looks to be right.

Might get used to his name, its James

I agree Nollan Carol got better every year. There is no question that he played his best ball for us this year. I rally liked the way he played against Julio Jones. I bet he has a big year in Philly. For the $1500m a year deal we should have signed him. He is one of the few players we were actually developing. Most fans hated him because of his play going up he learning curve.
We will see if Finnegan can come back to his previous form. I think Nollan best ball is in front of him..

Scout. I will not expand on his role or his title with the Pat's. I choise not to give that info as it would be too easy to pin point who my buddy is. Maybe I am being to carful but being around the org and hearing the stories that my buddy tells me I would think that they (the Pats) would not be to happy with my buddy having these convo's with me then me going and posting it on the internmet.

Yes I know your skepticism. I know how the gamee works. My buddy was a scout for A LONG TIME. I knowthe process from being an in-houde scout - to a road / reg scout scouting every school in the area / national scouts scouting only players in the top end of the draft. Just to expand a little on how ans why a scout would have seen tape of one player and not another is via a cross check where one scout passes his evaluation to another for that scout to check and make an opinion of what he thinks. Can't speak for another org but the for the Pat's yes a scout may be a reg guy but he will have a focus on let say LB's and maybe Corners. durring the cross check he will see the tape and write up for a west reg scout of the corners that he wrote up. Agian, I think I may have said too much and you can write my post off as garbage for all I care. I just like sharing this info with guys that want to hear a vie from a NFL scout.

No I believe you. Knowing the Pats, your buddy would be fired if they knew this. I figured he was in another region or was a national scout and one of his specific positions was WR for a cross check, which indeed it is. Every team in the league does the same thing. Thanks.

Thanks for the info OP. You didn't have to explain yourself to futurescout, or anyone else here, you've done this the past few years and have been right on. I dont blame you for being cautious with your friend's identity/specifics. Its too bad he didn't get to see James. Good to hear that not everyone thinks it was a major reach as some other articles have claimed.

I don't think Jawuan James needs to get "much stronger". apparently you haven't seen a close up of his arms.

Can he get stronger? sure.

"Came into the Senior Bowl's National Scouting Weigh-in looking flabby and clearly needing to add bulk and strength."

I remember reading this somewhere else...but when you look at him he looks a little soft. I think getting into an NFL program can do a TON for his development.

Then there is Armando I believe who said when he met him in the lobby who said he didn't look like he had a lot of extra baggage that OL usually have.

I noticed him in his suit for the finsiders interview and he actually looked more svelt than most big guys. maybe he knows how to get fitted for his suit correctly but I see this kid as a basketball player who can move left and right with no big issues and is not a fat ass. after rewatching the Senior Bowl I noticed Moses had a big butt. James is more athletic and knows how to use those long arms well. 2 sacks in the last 14 games or something like that.

Im glad we got him over the other two. I would have been happy with Koundjio before but with the medicals and him being a LT make James a better fit to me. A True RT who could eventually make it over to LT.

Rice or Bolton, neither had speed coming out of college. I think Landry will be a solid receiver and make pro bowl once he and Tannehill are comfortable w each other.

Common misatke made by fans and amatuers...the greatest receiver in history was a 4.6 forty(Jerry Rice)....Anquan Boldin was a 4.7 forty (headed to the hall of fame)....Mark Clayton was a 4.63 forty (Dan Marino's favorite target and great Dolphin receiver).

Football is not a track meet or a 40 yard sprint....its more about quickness in short space, intelligence, toughness, ability to get open and separate and how good your hands are.

This kid was tied for having the second biggest set of hands in this draft....and he is the toughest receiver with the best set of hands in this draft....he doesn't drop the football...what more do you want?

I predict a great NFL career ahead for Jarvis Landry.

And oh yeah............The Jets fans were livid that we got Landry....they wanted him badly on Gang Green.

I didn't want him to give up his source. And of course he doesn't have to explain himself. I was simply interested. I believe him. He had a valid answer for why he didn't scout James. His friend simply does not scout the south east region. All teams have scouts cross check certain positions. Then they go to the position coach, coordinator, head coach, and GM, etc. His friend cross checks WRs. Trust me, his answer proved 100% authenticity. I also, would love to see a link to older posts like these if anyone can find it.

Caught part of BSPN's 2hr post draft analysis panel including Mel and Todd (also Brewski and Jawz). Multi tasking so didn't hear everything but both of the draft guys were raving about Landry, how he's the real deal, could well turn out to be one of the best WRs in the class.... and in the segment re who will turn out to be the best pick round by round, I believe he was Todd's pick. Of course right now it's only verbiage, but very encouraging nonetheless.
