I’ve seen a lot of negativity around these here parts regarding Gesicki and a lot of it is, quite frankly tom foolery.
A lot of the blame last year is attributed to taco eyes Gase. He spent the entire year trying to force Mike into becoming a better blocker. IMO If he wanted that, he should have taken GOEDERT (which I am on record at the time of the pick expecting goedert to be our pick instead of gesicki) All of our gurus here told us this. The gurus on TV told us this. Why was it obvious to people outside of the NFL, but that creepy eyed mo’fo and his ego couldn’t see it? It’s blasphemous to the football gods. I will never understand that move. Maybe he was thinking it will be better long term for gesickis development? My theory is Gase wanted a different TE on draft day but was overruled so he told everyone to pound salt and purposely made gesicki block an outrageous amount.
I’m not done with gaseBot either. Mike spent a lot of last year in his doghouse because of that failed fade call early in the year. But rookies make mistakes! Setting those kind of tones is the worst! You have to let your young players grow. Now I do believe Mike needs to learn how to use his frame better to box out, that is a legitimate concern. Light a fire under him, but benching him for long periods of times was not the solution
Now what I see in Mike is an elite athlete; he accelerates to top speed with his gazelle like running stride, shows exceptional quickness at the top of his stem to shake free, and he’s got those loose hips to make guys miss. The man has all the tools to be great long term. Last year was not a good year for him by any means but get real how many TEs in the history of the nfl have lit the world on fire as a rookie? In 2019, the task has to be to get the ball into his hands in space so he can use that athleticism. I think Fitzpatrick will like him. He made OJ Howard a much better player when he got to Tampa. I saw OJ used as both an X and flanker when Brate was in at TE. This has to be the blue print for Gesicki going forward
Mike’s also an exceptionally hard worker. I have it on good authority that him and Smythe led by example in that room last year; they were like sponges absorbing that playbook. The man even offered to walk tannehills dog if it meant he would end up with a better connection with his qb. If you listen to him speak, you’ll get it like Mike gets it! He’s on the verge of breaking out, mark these words.
When Gesicki has a pro bowl caliber season in 2019... Your dude is picking up a sweet new #88 Gesicki jersey book it!
