Mayock also offered some cautionary words.
“The whole key obviously is you’ve gotta be right about (Tannehill),” Mayock said. “You miss that one this whole regime is gone.”
Mayock said Tannehill first grabbed his attention last summer at the Manning Passing Academy. He credits Tannehill’s strong arm, athleticism and the passes he throws on outside routes. He also was critical of his decision making down the middle – a problem with most inexperienced NFL quarterbacks – and his limited experience as a starting quarterback.
Last season, Tannehill threw for 3,744 yards, 29 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

That's a pretty dumb thing to say IMO. You're suppose to swing at any quarterback you have a shot at till you get the one who's taking you over the top. Let's not pretend like the Steelers knew what they had in Ben (dude was a huge project), that the Chargers knew what they had in Rivers.

I think Tannehill has as much ability as both of them, but his development will be key here and if we swing and miss then you just have to keep swinging some more.

Hell, quarterbacks are coming out in drafts in bunches now that even the Vikings nor the Titans have much loyalty to their first round quarterbacks.

rivers was a four year starter at nc state and beat fsu he was very good

It works both ways. If he passes on Tannehill and tannhill is a stud and the guy they draft is a dud or of little impact it could be a very short tenure

Some people need to cut the crap. There is a reason scouts are paid. I new what the hell Rivers was going into the draft and I'm not a paid expert. If you are unsure about a prospects on field ability they shouldn't be taken in the top 10. In every draft there are prospects that you know exactly what they are and how you can use them. Some drafts have more than others.

Actually, your post is a "pretty dumb thing to say IMO." Who says "you're suppose to swing at any quarterback you have a shot at till you get the one who's taking you over the top" except you and the media nutwits who have either never been pro talent evaluators or failed ones?

Tannehill has NOT been impressive in games, only in shorts and tshirts. He wasn't even good enough to be a backup QB for Mike Sherman at Texas A&M for his first two years, and he wasn't even good enough to start at QB until midway through his third year -- and he was behind QBs who never even got drafted by NFL teams. That's why he wound up with only 19 starts. Against Texas A&M's ranked opponents, he got 1 win against 4 or 5 losses in 2011, and his poor play contributed to Sherman's getting fired.

Now, the media might think that Sherman must love Tannehill because of the college connection, but IMO, Sherman's very well aware of his many faults. If Miami takes Tannehill, it will probably be inspite of Sherman rather than because of him.

FTR, Rivers was a four year starter at NC State. Roethlisberger was considered the most-NFL ready of all the QBs in the 2004 draft. Tannehill isn't Rivers or Roethlisberger or even JP Losman. He's more like Brad Smith when he plays in the wildcat formation: a converted WR at QB.

You may have point.

The mistake a lot of previous regimes have made is "sticking with their guy" through thick and thin, regardless of whether it was apparent to the rest of the world that they were not going to develop into franchise (or even decent) QBs.

It really doesn't take that long to figure out whether a guy has it or not. Both Sherman and Philbin have been around great QBs. If Tannehill isn't developing, there is no logical reason to stick with him for the rest of their careers. The nice thing about the new rookie wage scale is that teams aren't set back years by drafting a QB early on. It's far easier to move on now.

I think its a good bet that Tannehill would be better then what we have making it an upgrade for the phins.

Like when we essentially passed on Flynn by extending a courtesy face-saving non-offer, we again have an advantage, this time of Sherman, who knows a thing or two about elite QBs having best insight on Tannehill. So I will defer any judgment under the theory that he knows best.

The one caveat to that would be: if we draft Tannehill who turns out to be a Quinn type over-hyped under-qualified reach, while I believe Philbin and Sherman will get a pass, on the other hand I don't think Ireland's job stability status can withstand that kind of setback. Consequently unlike with Flynn, IMO if we don't take Tannehill, it might reflect more on Jeff's job-preservation type decision than it would on Sherman/Philbin's preferences.

You may have point.

Tannehill reminds me of Aaron Maybin, a guy who shouldn't have been considered in the first round but who looked good in shorts and tshirts, too. He also seems much like Blaine Gabbert last year: a product of media hype who wasn't very impressive on the field against first rate competition.
