7. Minkah Fitzpatrick, Miami Dolphins
Passer Rating Allowed: 69.0
Fitzpatrick is the second rookie to make this list, but he’s the first player to make it who didn’t primarily play outside corner in 2018. The Dolphins had Minkah line up all over the field this past season; he spent 379 snaps as a slot corner, 281 snaps out wide and another 261 snaps as either a free or box safety. In coverage, Minkah was especially effective out of the slot, where he ranked first among cornerbacks by allowing just a 53.4 passer rating.

They don't mention how Minkah actually did on the boundary. I would venture to say we will never see him there again.

This why I believe the Dolphins should use a base nickel defense and Minkah should be the starter in the slot and Bobby McCain should be a dime back.

As long as TJ McDonald is healthy,under contract, and playing decent as FS, I don't see a better option for this personnel.

100%. That is all the more a reason to trade Minkah during this rebuild. Dolphins have pressing needs at other spots that should be addressed in the draft, other than a nickel corner.

If the Dolphins release or trade Bobby this year it wouldn't result in any cap room. After his complete and utter failure last year at boundary corner, he has 0 trade value.

I don't understand your objection to him being a dime back. His coverage grades at slot are good, it's just that Minkah is the best slot corner in the NFL, and slot corner is now a starting gig.
 
Minkah should be ready to play any position we need him to.

I am against his whining for 1 position only. We and he knew when we drafted him that he was our “Chess Piece”.

Minkah knew that when he signed the contract too.

P.S. I almost always take the Players Side when discussing salary disputes. Take ALL you can and then some for the players.

Minkah may be best utilized in the slot, but McCain lost at least 2 games for the team last season all by himself. Not a fan of measuring a player by his grade, I watch the games the guy stinks.

Which is why he should never be used as a boundary CB and only as a nickel, where he's actually pretty above average.

Much better than Mccain, Mctyer and Tank.

I was actually getting ready to say this.

HE wasn't great, but he was by no means awful and held his own at times. I do think that if he were to make the full switch to a boundary position (he mentioned about adjusting his off-season based on the position) I think he would be a damn good number 2.

As mush as I think he would make a very good FS, I do think he best used in a variety of positions on the defense, we just really need a DC who is able to move him around.

I do wonder if Flores and crew envision him as his new Devin McCourty? It will be interesting so see how this plays out...I will say that Minkah is one of the smartest and hardest working players on the team and will put in effort for whatever position they decide for him.

I wouldnt call McDonald decent at FS...in fact I wouldnt call him anything at FS. When he was healthy they were 'forced' to put Reshad Jones deep because McDonald simply cannot do it.

The problem is, in this defense, Minkah is going to be pretty valuable at slot and the rover roll. But what do you do with at free when hes inside? I dont think we have that answer on the roster currently. They are probably hoping Rowe can take the outside job and let McCain work primarily on the inside so Minkah can be more of a FS/Rover. But when Minkah does Rove, you still need at least SOMEONE that can play deep and we don't have that right now.
