Mobile Backup QB

Luckily, I was able to find the mobile qb this post is talking about.

I hope we sign this guy as Tua’s backup.

I've always said that you need a QB that mirrors your starter the best as possible as your reserve. I dont want a gimmicky QB as Tua's back-up. "yeah its great we have a QB that can come in and run the wildcat" well thats awesome since we spend 5 minutes in practice running those 3 plays, and the other 99% of practice is spent running your base offense. Skylar had over 1000 rushing yards in college, he's not exactly a statue. I was all for even trying to see if we could find a remotely decent leftie QB.

I still wanted to get Holton Ahlers another off season lookie, but thats homerism

I think whether or not Tua resigns soon, or if we resign him at all, which I think we will sign him soon, we need to bring a mobile Quarterback to back him up or take his place, preferably through the draft.

The reason I believe we need to consider a QB who is elite or very good at scrambling is because of Tua himself. Tua's ability to get the ball out quickly has made the oline look much better than they actually are.

If we sign Tua to a huge contract, his back up will need to be on a cheap contract and be capable to escape pressure. If we keep trying to fit these pocket passers in behind Tua, all we will see is that they do not match Tua's quick release and processing abilities which are elite. We will need someone who will be able to take off and make the defense pay for over playing the pass, whenever Tua gets injured, which he has a shown he does have to take off some games each year.

We need a contingency plan other than Mike White and Skylar Thompson if we seriously want to be contenders because injuries will come and with that much money at one position, you have to be ready to replace him or ready to lose the entire season.

At this point Tua has never had serious competition at the position. A pre-retirement Ryan Fitzpatick is not a good response to someone good he has had to beat out.

Or you know, we could just find another QB with the skillset of Tua. I keep hearing how the guy sucks so we should be able to pluck another one from any college on the cheap, right?

This last paragraph makes no sense whatsoever. They're about to sign this guy to more than $50 million per year. No qb is going to be brought in for " serious competition" when the starter has just been paid that.

Just for fun, I looked at tears 2014 through 2023. which winning teams drafted a QB in R1-2. There were 11. Of those 11, those with 'top' QBs (and I'll be generous) were DEN, NE, KC, BAL, GB, and TB. DEV had PManning in his last year. NE and TB had Brady. GB was Rodgers. I doubt the rookie was brought in as competition for any of those 4 teams. KC had Alex smith and BAL had Flacco. That's it. Other winning teams had such great QBs as Tyrod Taylor, Ryan Fitspatrick, and Oswieler.
It appears no or extremely few, depending on where we rank A Smith and Flacco, subscribe to bringing in competition for a top QB. Nope. I realize you and some others want that to happen, but for some reason, NFL teams don't do that. It's like drafting pure BPA. which teams do that every year throoughout the draft?

Why not include QBs that have elite pocket awareness like Tua. I agree he makes the line look better than it is.

I have a suspicion the answer to my own question is "all those QBs are successful and highly paid NFL starters". Every QB in the NFL can throw, so pocket presence might be valued as high as anything else, even over athleticism. The media probably prefers athleticism, but Tannehill was a converted WR for godssakes, and Marino probably avoided the rush better his first game back from his Achilles injury.

I digress....you make a good point about replicating the value that Tua offers to mitigating the pass rush.

I liked that point as well. Everything made sense up until that weird last paragraph about "serious competition."

Back up QBs are usually older guys that operate as a second offensive coordinator and help with the game planning during the week or a young QB the team likes that they used a mid-to-late draft pick on.

McDaniel seems to have something for unremarkable college QBs that have "raw" talent. While he was with the 49ers, they had CJ Beathard and Nick Mullins (he had a couple of good passing seasons in college) and while he has been here he has kicked the tires on Skylar Thompson, James Blackmon, and now Gavin Hardison. Looking at Gavin Hardison's college resume i seriously don't know how he got an offer from a CFL team, let alone an NFL team. Hardison got past rookie and team OTAs, so they must have some interest in seeing more.

No one is disputing Tua here though? The only relevance to Tua here is regarding his health and why a backup QB is needed to begin with.

That’s why you should get someone with Tua’s skill set as the backup rather than a mobile QB. Teams just don’t have enough time to learn 2 offences.

There are plenty on this board who think Tua is average at best and easily replaceable which if true then there should be no issue finding a backup for him.

Steelers. An organization known for making smart football moves.

Falcons are doing it too. But I am just saying bring in good potential guys. Not look for his outright replacement. If it happens good but scour the acorns. Dont just settle.

You would think I called for Tua's head. If we got another guy, and he was way better than Tua somehow, I would still say to try to get a competent backup QB for him, just in case. It is called a contingency plan.
