Mort and Adam: Philbin Wanted to Cut Incognito

A couple things to note from reading this thread.

1)Just because Brian Gaine is under Ireland doesn't mean he wouldn't be a GM. Just look at Detroit, Martin Mayhew was Matt MIllen's right hand man. Millen was horrible but Mayhem has been a decent GM. Sure he has a team filled with knuckleheads, but it's a talented team. Not endorsing Gaine, but we don't have to blame him for Ireland's failures (though admittedly, the same has been said about Ireland with Parcells)

2)Rex is a good defensive coach and he's a guy whose players love him. So was Tony Sparano. Rex doesn't have a QB... okay. Well Rex is also the guy whose so confident in his D that he and the GM of the Jets have continuously ignored the offensive side of the ball for a few years now. Gotta go both ways.

3) Some people really love to bash Joe Philbin. He deserves some criticisms for this year for sure, but some of you are just being idiotic in your criticisms. He's shown some good things and he's shown some bad things.
I'm guilty of 1) and that normally goes against my thinking. However, the distaste that Parcells and Ireland have brought me personally is why I want nothing to do with anyone associated with those 2.

For the record, I am a big Martin Mayhew fan. He and Tom Lewand have done a gat job acquiring talent in Detroit. I think they need to take a look at replacing Schwartz if they want to take the next step.

Oh I understand the reasoning for not wanting Brian Gaine to run the show, and am not saying it's wrong. But he is a guy that 3 teams have requested interviews for when their GM position opened up (We told St. Louis no, Arizona went in house, and Gaine told the Jets no) so it's not like he's some random bum. And from the little I've seen of him talk, he seems a lot more likable than Ireland.

And I do think Jim Schwartz is a good coach, but he promotes too much of a thug mentality on the field that will cost the Lions down the road.

I could get behind Brian Gaine. I like somethings I hear about him. Got to love a Blackbear grad.

I'll bet it was OL coach Turner that wanted to keep Rotten Richie. Aside from his boorish behavior he is a pro and comes to camp in shape and works his arse off. Having that veteran presence next a very young and immature John Martin is win, win in my book.

If Irish was successful in signing another solid veteran, remember Lance Louis? who could step into the LG on the line. Say goodbye to Rotten Richie.

IMO Richie needs a another solid personality to keep inline. Much like Bill Laimbeer kept Dennis Rodman in check on the Piston championship teams. When Jake Long left Richie went wild, jmo

I don't believe it for one second. Philbin's own son did a lot worse and got away with only 6 months in prison and probation. And if it wasn't for people like myself bringing it out, most of you would not have known about it.

Philbin should have cut his son? Not getting your point.

If Philbin is worthy of another year I think we definitely should promote somebody in house, don't care that much who it is although I'm pretty sure Dawn is an idiot so hopefully its not her.

How is Dawn an idiot? please explain.

Why would a worthwhile GM that has waited his entire career want to inherit his coach? If you keep Philbin, either you have let Joe find his own GM or find a guy that has professional connection to him.

ok so it will be 3-1. But Philbin is not considered a bad coach around the league. I just dont get why you insist someone like Rex makes a better HC. He makes a great DC. End of story.

How is he 4-1 vs Rex when they have faced each other 3 times? Please do not tell me about my "marbles" when you cannot count to 3.

It must have been the bogus article i read the other day then. I blame them.

My point is he does not have a QB. I would like to see him coach with a credible QB...just not in our division.

I think that Joe's GM has not screwed as much as you say. I think Joe is underachieving with the talent he has.

I DO agree that a trade for Braden Albert should have been made or seeking out a trade with Jacksonville for Eugene Monroe. With that said, credit should go to the GM for getting McKinnie in a trade.

With that said, Ireland is done. Joe will survive and our debate this offseason will be who the GM should be. I just am totally against a forced marriage. IF Joe is to return, let him pick HIS GM, give him personnel control or promote Brian Gaine. Gaine is interesting to me. There is professional connection of Kirk Ferentz between Gaine and Joe.

I do not want what the Jets and Panthers are doing now. It does not work.

Panthers? Yeah, you've lost your marbles.

Her take it or leave it, we're done talking negotiation tactics. Tannehill: sign the contract with offset language or go back into the draft. She did something similar with Soliai which resulted in his agent spitting all over the franchise on twitter, and never got a deal done.

To me its better to overpay some of these guys slightly than risk alienating them against the very team you want them to play their hearts out for. Thats what bugs me about the whole offset BS, I want my rookie to be coddled, I want him to feel like he won the lottery by being selected by our franchise and I want that feeling to continue from draft day through to the first day of the season. Not here though, we start them off by stressing them out with hardcore contract negotiations.

2) Arranged marriages working for the Panthers and, to a lesser degree, the Jets. Last year, Phil Emery dropped the hammer on Lovie Smith even though the Bears won 10 games. The assumption had been that similar situations would unfold in Carolina and New York, respectively, with the coaches whom new GMs Dave Gettleman and John Idzik inherited. Safe to say, Ron Rivera has changed the narrative in Charlotte, and word is Gettleman has been impressed with the identity that's been forged. Rex Ryan, on the other hand, has another month to make his GM's decision a difficult one. And Ryan swears now that he's enjoyed the arrangement, awkward as it might've been initially. "We stand together, shoulder to shoulder, there's no doubt. He's been fantastic, no question," Ryan told me about Idzik. "He's been great, great to work with and great to be around. Shoot, it's funny; both our dads are former Jets. So we look at this team the same way and with that kind of drive and desire to get this team back where it should be." Can these arrangements work long term? Sure. But it's worth noting that, looking at the last 20 Super Bowl champions, there really aren't any examples of GMs coming in, keeping the coaches they inherit and winning at the highest level....Albert Breer

That makes her shrewed. Not an idiot.

so you took an article from Breer and just bought in? Every team has different circumstances and positions of ranking in the league. Carolina changed the OC to a guy who worked with the QB to rein him in while the HC got his defensive talent he could build around. Thats all coaching/players ect.

The Jets drafting Geno Smith thinking they got value in the 2nd round and already had a 1st round bust. It seems to me, the new GM in NY sucks ass.

Now to your point on REx being a good coach. He shouldnt be blamed for the mess he is in now, but he certainly can be blamed for telling his team they are going to the superbowl before the season even starts.

Who the F does that Hayden? So now he is mr. slimfast while more meek. So What? He is screwed, got his three year chance, chose Tony friggin Sparano of all people to run his offense (OMG!), and preceded to act like an idiot until this year when his ego was shown the door by new management.

Thats not what I am seeing here in Miami. Ireland keeps drafting studs in first round. You all can debate on the rest, but guess what? He scored on more than he did not, just like everyone else in this damn league.
