Mort on Mike and Mike

Ross is "loyal" to his employees, but has no "loyalty" to his fan base in putting together a logical football operation to compete in the 21st Century.

It's obvious to me Ross is an old school manager. He believes in learning from lessons and continuity breeding success. These are not the types to continue rehashing a problem year in and year out. Once their efforts are exercised on a decision, they work within the decision. They do not go back and continually focus resources on it.

Ross gave Ireland a new contract quietly after the draft and Free Agency. In his eyes, Jeff and the FO were given tasks and allowed to work within those tasks to meet the goals set forth by the rest of the organization. Apparently Jeff hit on all or most of his required milestones set forth by the organization. Thus he was rewarded.

If you follow this thinking, the problem, in Ross' eyes, is not with Jeff Ireland. And regardless of past failures or opinions, fans need to get right with Ross' viewpoint. Otherwise, we will just continue getting angrier and angrier about a situation we do not know enough about. And continuing to base our judgments on criteria not shared by the owner.

Ross was happy at 8 - 6. Giving the staff reassurances about next year. Then we flounder to 8 - 8 against 2 inferior DIVISION opponents and missed the playoffs. What could Jeff Ireland have done during those 2 games to change the outcome? Nothing. Thus in Ross' eyes the blame is on coaching and players.

How does a person who believes in long term continuity deal with unexpected failure after only a short term? Firing people? No.

Ross is conferring because he needs advise on how few tweaks he HAS to make in order to maintain continuity while manufacturing the most productivity and results from his current collection of people.

I think it's obvious the OL Coach is gone. And there may be some other sacrificial lambs. But Ross loves Philbin. Sherman is highly respected. And people such as Dan Marino will advise Ross that getting rid of Sherman would hurt Tannehill's development. And what is really needed is to fix the obvious problems: 1) Offensive Line, 2) Running Game and 3) Blocking TEs and FBs.

Then it will be suggested that Sherman change his play calling to be more balanced and less predictable.

It has been proven that longevity is the key to sustained success in the NFL. The fans want immediate success, starting next year. Most say they are patient to wait 3 years until we have sustained success. Well here we are; entering year 3. 7-9 to 8-8 is progress. And it's one game from the playoffs. And if success is not reached by any regime until Year 3, then we do not have the luxury of choosing which reasons we fail. Every regime will fail for different reasons. The difference is how they respond to challenges.

It's obvious the OLine and offense were challenged this year. But we still grew in certain areas, shed ourselves of a scandal and still almost made the playoffs. The problems are identified. Ross will give this collection of minds 1 more year to solve their problems. Even if they fail again, I do not expect a regime change. I expect OC and DC changes. But for the Ireland haters, until Ross believes Ireland is the reason for failure on the field he will have a job.

Remember, he got a raise after players had been acquired for the year. It's obvious to me that Ireland acquired the players Philbin and Staff wanted. It's on them if they couldn't manufacture wins from the players they wanted.

And I think Coyle has a lot of explaining to do for the lack of Jordan being on the field. I would imagine that topic has him firmly in the cross hairs. But not enough to lose his job in one year.

Ross doesn't knee jerk guys. A few sacrificial lambs is all in this year's slaughter.

Ross needs a committee to decide if he should form a committee, to hire committees, to make decisions
a committee committee, I'm sure they get paid handsomely and provide Ross with a nice write off come tax time.

If Ross keeps Ireland my suggestion to the season ticket holders is don't renew and those who make the trip once or twice each year, stay home. When you stop buying his product he has to make changes.

I fly from NJ and was able to attend the great Titans game last year when we really showed up and showed the Titans what we were made of. After that, and after this dreadful season, it will be many years before I spend any money on this garbage team.

How many years do we have to say that?
Until those that was directed at follow through with it. Basic business principal. Lions fans were notoriously loyal no matter how bad but after 6 years of Millen, they stopped coming. It took 2 additional years but they now have an excellent front office and if they find a good head coach who can put together a quality staff, are looking at a successful run.

The way this team collapsed down the stretch steadied by Tannehill's far below average play, I don't see how 2014 will be of any success.

i can see it possibly going down like this...

I don't know that the Lions have an 'excellent' front office.

And by the way, Martin Mayhew worked under Matt Millen. This is why I get so frustrated when people say that we can't possibly promote Brian Gaine. Just because person A works for person B, it does not mean that person A shares the values, competence, and philosophies of person B. In fact, person A often resents person B and thinks he could do things a lot better.

I'd love to find out what Brian Gaine is made of.

There appears to be only one thing that will force Ross's hand. A complete boycott of season tickets, merchandise and viewership. If Ross only understands money, then that's what will get his attention.

Martin Mayhew and Tom Lewand (VP) both worked under Millen but neither had much input into personnel decisions. Since taking over, Mayhew has brought in a lot of talent and completed rebuilding a bad OL in 2 seasons. His only mistake was hiring Schwartz who has no clue what discipline is. I have a rooting interest in the Lions as it is my hometown and have followed their moves closely as long as I have been a Dolphins fan. Initially I thought going to Mayhew was a mistake but he is viewed around the league as an excellent GM.

It's true that the Lions #1 far and away problem was coaching. Schwartz was flat out awful.

Really all I wanted to say is that I would be fine with giving Gaine a shot. He could turn out to be really good at his job. Just because he works for an inept moron does not mean that HE is an inept moron. Plenty of competent people get stuck working for inept morons until the inept moron finally gets ****canned and then they get a chance to show what they can do.

I'll be honest that I don't like the idea of Gaine long term but I'd be willing to give him a shot at one off season and see how he does. But the problem with this piece milling is that you will always have hold over from a bad staff. I am far more willing to accept gutting the entire front office and coaching staff then onsies and twosies.

I think it should be apparent by now that Steve Ross simply isn't going to do that unless something drastic happens, such as Joe Philbin drawing a line in the sand.

Nothing personal Joe, but I hope you draw that line. This franchise needs an enema bad.

Whatever happens, we should find out soon. Ross has arrived at Dolphins camp.
