The Human Bullet
I would like to retain Wannstedt, and the current coaching staff, and promote Spielman to GM.
Let O Gun go for the first and third draft pick tender, release Madison after 6-1, and if the line and second WR position is improved, rework Jay's contract, and draft a QB in the first round.
We would have two number ones, and two number threes. That's four picks in the first day. A QB, a WR in the first round, and then two O lineman with the two 3rd round picks. You never know who is desperate for a pass rusher, we may get a high first rounder from a team like Detroit, Oakland, or Arizona. That puts us in position to get a top flight QB prospect.
Fill in the blank spots on defense with the second day.
Now with cutting Brian Griese, reworking Jay's contract and cutting Madison, we should be in Ok cap shape. Do our usual re-structuring/pay cuts, and we can maintain a decent level of play from the defense.
Now we have Jay start the season, and groom the rookie QB. With a better O line, Jay has time to throw, and Ricky has room to run. A serious threat opposite Chambers, and the defense can't stack the line.
This team has had two 11-5 seasons with Jay at QB, (and Lamar Smith was running the ball). I believe we can improve the offense enough to get another 11-5, or maybe a 12-4 season.
IF we can find a quality veteran QB at the right price, then I am all for letting Jay walk, and going that route. However I am not happy with what's out there, save for possibly picking up Warner at the right price. I know his level of play has dropped off, but his possible upside beats Jay's...big time.
A new coaching staff brings the unknown. I don't know about you guys, but the possiblity of a 4-12 season, wasting yet another year of Zach, and J.T's football playing days makes me wince.
At least we know Wannstedt can produce a winning season, and Spielman filling the GM role might just do the trick. Just look at Holmgren, and what happened when he got all the power...mediocre.
That's MY personal theory, feel free to disagree.
