Random thoughts from watching each offensive play a gazillion times (I was bored tonight)

...
-First the infamous "INT" that we all keep talking about... My impression was that it was Fasano's fault mostly with a little bit on Henne, here why... Fasano had about a 5-7 yard out route. As soon as he cut out, the ball was there on his back shoulder/chest. Momentum was carrying him away from the ball so its not the easiest play, especially for a guy thats not too agile. Also, Henne had Clay open a few feet away in the same general vicinity, not like he had to look very far... Anyways...

-Vernon Carey looks lost in the run game. No push.
-He did alright in pass protection, got bull rushed once
-Henne had good pass protection. One corner blitz wasn't picked up and he was able to escape the pressure but Bess dropped the pass (Wasn't the best pass in the world but its an improvement for Henne)
-Mike Pouncey looks great in pass protection. Hard to tell in the run game though.
-Incognito played well in pass protection. Hard to tell in the run game.
-Colombo played well in pass protection. Went against Abraham some plays and protected well.
-Surprise of the night was watching Murtha. He looks much improved from last year going up against Abraham. He did completely whiff on one play though.
-Moore's first 2 or 3 drives was hard to evaluate bc the OL was terrible in pass protection. Luckily though, he was able to evade would-be sacks.
-Nice throws under pressure. Couple to Wallace.
-Moore keeps his eyes downfield and seems very confident sitting in the pocket.
-Kory Sheets compared himself to Reggie Bush... Not even close. I'll admit, just like Moore's first couple of drives, he too had no help from the Oline. But he did eventually have some space to run and didn't help his cause much. One time even running behind and into his blocking TE.
-Lex Hilliard was barely utilized. He's a bruiser though.
-Grigsby looked good, nice agility. I'd like to see more of him.
-All this talk about how impressive Devlin looked in camp did not translate. He looked uncomfortable and looks to be a big developmental guy. Probably practice squad.
-He did do one thing which was interesting that I cant recall Henne ever doing. One play, he called out the blitzing safety(or corner?) to alert the Olinemen. ATL's defense quickly told that DB to not blitz. cool stuff.
-Ray Willis got abused one play resulting in a sack on Devlin.
-Oh and theres news that either Misi or Spittler is hurt.. I THINK it might be Spittler. Hard to tell though... After Wilson's sack and fumble, Spittler recovers the ball and an ATL defender jumps on Spittler's leg and it looked like Spittler was in pain but the cameras switched too quickly.

I agree with you about Sheets. I'm not dumb enough to hold the runs against him where the o-line literally gave him nothing (like some are doing with DT), but he did start to get some space and for a guy who is supposed to be a speed back, I didn't see incredible quickness, agility, or any other absolutely outstanding physical tool. He's not slow, but to be a speed back in the NFL, you have to be faster than the defense, which is a hard to do. I also caught the time where he pretty much ran into his blocker, ironically on one of the only plays where he had a chance.

Grigsby didn't distinguish himself and you have to figure the team knows what it has in Hilliard at this point.

Pouncey's was regularly gettingmto the second level and pushing his assignment the correct direction. He is fine for assignments and the physical part of the job. It looked like he blew some line calls, and it really hurt the first team's ability to control the running game.

spitler i heard is in a walking boot not good...
Devlin wasn't getting much help from his line not enough reps need to see more to evaluate...
If I'm ireland I'm doing every thing i can to bring in more offensive lineman.
I dont like the musical chairs on the oline but if this game is any indicator of our run game we are in trouble..

Since Marshall and Bush didn't play (along with it being preseason), I wouldn't hold too much stock in a lot of what happened. We say this every year though so I'm not sure why it has to keep being brought up.

Look, I will give Pouncey a pass as he had little practice and is a rookie playing in his first game but no way did he get to " the second " level on any basis at all. The running plays were being stuffed by Atlanta COMPLETELY attacking our Right side and easily pushing Columbo and Carey into the middle and tackling the runner from the side or back. I counted one time Pouncey made it to the " second level " and thats only because Atlanta had no one head to head on him. On that same play, same result. Atlanta attacked our right side of the Oline and shoved Columbo and Carey into the middle like shopping carts, right into our runner. As a rookie Pouncey survived the game. As a good NFL lineman, especially center, Pouncey has a looooooooong way to go and he is not even close to the talent his brother is at this present time , not close, day and night not close.

It's not Pounceys fault Carey sucked in the run game. Pouncey played well, especially in pass protection.

I'm not worried as most....Our #1 stud WR did not play. Our #1 stud LT did not play. Our stud change of pace/"scare defensive coordinators" RB did not play. Our #1 slot guy looked great (minus the one route thing), our starting #2 Hartline played his *** off. Our # draft pick/center played well, did not get pushed back or avoid blocks totally like Satele used too, Daniel Thomas caught the ball and people were questioning his hands.

If we can pass protect well, we may not need to run for 4.5 yards a carry. Just throw short passes to Bess, screens to Gates, bombs to Marshall, and swing passes to Bush and Thomas all year....NE never had a power run game and they still win a ton of games every year....screw the power run game, let's just score TD's.

why are people so hung up on a running game? everyone in the know talks about it being a pass first league now.

Good read, but I think Its Misi who is hurt....on the first series 3rd play, Ryan was hit as he threw, Dansby jumped on the ball and rolled on both of Misi feet and ankles....to me it looked bad but Misi did play another series not sure if that was a wise thing on his part.

thats prob cus he's only been practicing with the team for 12 days. i will take that as a compliment to pouncey. What i noticed is no major screwups and he held his own.

OL as a whole did well in pass protection, terrible against run. This could be due to we are implementing a spread offense with short offseason to prepare and we really are a pass first team. I dont buy we will smash mouth anything. I think we are opening up lanes from pass first mode. The run blocking will take time. Pouncey contols the line. It will come in time.

Saw sheets get tackled by a lineman on an out play, just looked average to me. I thought Odrick looked good in pass rush though, not much talk about him here on the site but I like him.

i totally relate to this post.

for what its worth, i did notice jerry a little. he didnt look half bad on one play. he was going against his brother Peria. who btw, was in the entire game i think. I think the jerrys have an eating problem.
