Myles Gaskin discussion can he stick

Duke has always been a talented runner, and fresh legs late plus running against 3 of the worst run defenses on the schedule helped too.
Gaskin is a below average runner who does many things solidly but nothing great. He's basically early career James White. People here act like he's the reason the offense sucked. Brother, this offense would have sucked with any RB from the last 2 draft classes leading the run game.
I don't think he's the reason the offense sucked. But, I don't think he's one of the reasons it could improve as such, I hope he's on another team this year.

Duke has always been an average runner. He just looked talented compared to Gaskin. It would have been the same for any back who hit the hole decisively and explosively. We had an OL who had trouble sustaining blocks so any back quick enough to limit how often they had to do that would have looked better as a runner.

And Jonathan Taylor would have made this run game look great. He is one of those guys that elevates the OL. I lost count of how many times I watched his games where the OL made a huge mistake and on his own made a big play.

Gaskin's big plays in the running game came from having lots of open room or poor tackling; he wasn't one to be physical and break tackles. That's why I wanted to keep Duke Johnson; behind the same OL, Duke ran through defenders and made it look easy. In fact, I think Miami's most physical rusher over the past few years was FitzMagic!

Gaskin is fine as a receiver, or as the third or fourth RB, but he's not the "guy".

"One Armstead injury away from being worse than last year"

I do t see it that way at all. Just swapping out Davis for Williams is a pretty big upgrade at the weakest link. On top of that all new coaching with a lot more OL background, plus development of the very young youngsters. I think even without Armstead playing more than his usual 10ish games this line is greatly improved, even if that only moves its ranking from say, 32 to 27th. Add in arguably better RBs and WR options to keep defenses more honest and even the same line might look better.
With how our line played last year we could move from 32nd to a better 32nd and the improvement could be noticeable

I think Gaskin got kind of a raw deal and is better than this board generally gives him credit for. But I don't think he sticks this year. That 2.5m is more valuable than an at best 3rd RB given cap situation going forward.
He'll catch on as a 3rd down/receiving back in the league.
I think Gaskin could get you a 5th or at the least a 6th on a team in a pinch, he's a proven player

Duke proved to be the far better back last year. I’m still puzzled why Flo and the hydra-headed OC didn’t see what most fans saw. Gaskin just can’t get much beyond first contact.

Gaskin’s time as a MD is done. I wish him the best and I think he’s got 3-4 years left of being a backup. He’s healthy and experienced.

That said, our standards have been elevated and there isn’t room for regression at this point.

Aside (and above) all that, we don’t want his salary on the books when it can increase next years roll over .
