For years, the Dolphins proudly stood among the NFL’s marquee, model franchises, an esteemed organization that held the distinction — at least until a few years ago — of producing the highest winning percentage of any NFL team since 1970.

That perception has been shattered under the weight of mismanagement, misfortune and a myriad of other factors. Very little of significance has gone right for the Dolphins for a decade, and Friday’s news that coach Jeff Fisher chose the St. Louis Rams instead of Miami will be perceived nationally as the latest setback to a team with just one playoff appearance since January 2002.

“It’s over for them being a marquee franchise,” Manny Fernandez, a standout on the Dolphins’ glory teams of the early 1970s, said Friday night. “The only thing marquee about them is South Beach. How many mistakes have they made? How many bad decisions? It just goes on and on. And it’s ridiculous not to give a coach final say over the personnel he’s responsible for winning with.”

Nice article,

Was surprised to read Theisman not be anti-dolphin. I liked what he and Gannon said.

Whoa... that was like real journalism or something.

Interviews, citing sources, no personal opinions.

Good article.

Good article.

I've been saying it for some time now, Barry Jackson is the best Dolphins reporter in south Florida. Not even a close second. David Hyde is good and I really miss Jason Cole down here, he was great. Edwin Pope used to be the king down here and Bernie Lincicome was very good as well, way better than the Armando and Omar Kelly crapfest we have down here now. Those guys can't even compare to Barry Jackson.

I always like his articles too. I feel like he has a better inside track than most of the other guys. I like Hyde as well.

i wish more ex players would come forward and express their feelings. im sure ross reads the herald daily.

i watched the dolphins weekly show last week. and bokamper , who is very close inside the team, said the dolphins shouldnt go after philbin or flynn.

I think the most telling part of that article was made by Manny Fernandez.....how can you have a coach that has no saying on the players he's been asked to win with?.....the way they have it now is Ireland picks the players HE wants and tells the coach he needs to win with those players?....the more I think about it the more I think that Ireland needs to go or else, we're not going to win anytime soon.I hope I'm wrong of course but that's the feeling I get.

Ozzy rules!!

Refreshing article for a change. It's interesting to note the comments from different people and ex players. Although Ross may be relatively new to the game, ay least he still garners some respect. (Gotta stop listening to the Big 'O')

I truly worried about this next hire. I sense we're closer to becoming like the Detroit Lions, rather than regaining our glory.

I never thought we would lose a coaching decision between us and the Rams. It is a sad down hill slide that started with Shula leaving and Jimmy Johnson running Marino out of town. The biggest thorn in our side has been our pathetic ability to draft, especially in the early rounds. Between that and the musical chair head coach theme, it has been painful to watch. I still love my Dolphins and hope we can reverse the nose dive!

Sorry, I just don't get where a coach who through a large seasonal sampling averaging 3.5 winning seasons out of every 10 can command the final say. Conceptually it sounds good but I'm sure successful coaches like Tomlin, McCarthy and Payton to name a few didn't have that stipulation in their agreement coming in. While Fisher was experienced it's true, there's nothing persuasive in his body of work to justify giving him those keys to the kingdom IMO. Hell, statistically Herm Edwards has delivered 5 winning season out of every 10, Jim Fassel 4.4; hell even Rich Kotite put up a similar 3.3 winning seasons out of every 10. And consider that that Fisher's last 2 he went 14-18, so it's not even that he was on a roll.

To me, not knuckling under to the demands of a mediocre coach who, since Billick wasn't in the picture, was the best of a bad breed when it came those having prior HC experience, was a positive sign that Ross has finally grown some cajones, not another indictment on the franchise! Now conversely if we were romancing a winning coach like a Reid, McCarthy or Payton, I could see us readily making those justifiable concessions and looking bad if we lost someone worthwhile because we did not. Different scenario completely.

I love the Quote that GB would never give a coach the power Fisher was looking for, most here want us to be run like the Packers but I guess that only means certain things you can pick and choose to still slam our organization!

ehhh....pretty much what i've been sayin all along...you can't say that your gonna bring in a big name coach or go for the flashy guy and then when its time to put the chips on the table pull the damn rug from under him...

and that looking for a coach while you still had sparano on a string...that stuff people remember and when it comes down to you and someone else for these guys its gonna weigh in heavily and it should...its just dumb

2 years in a row 2 failures by ross

I agree, about the control that Fisher wanted. He doesn't merit it, and I'm glad Ross didn't concede it. While I think Ireland is super unpopular with fans, largely for his association to Parcells, and the stupid Dez Bryant hoopla, but it may become apparent Ireland doesn't have the bad reputation among football people.

It's going to be interesting how this thing goes. I sure hope the "young Don Shula" statement doesn't limit our possibilities.

I'm sure Denver had that very same notion when they hired McDaniels.

green bay has probably the best front office man in the business ted thompson in house...of course they're not gonna give away absolute power to anyone when he's the star of the show...
