National media, ex-Fins address Miami Dolphins’ woes

Very good article. It puts an exclamation on the fact that we need to find a real quarterback this off season. The coach is important, but we need that QB to build the franchise around.

green bay has probably the best front office man in the business ted thompson in house...of course they're not gonna give away absolute power to anyone when he's the star of the show...

When you have a star Thompson at GM, that is the case.
Now when you have Ireland, mediocre GM, that isn't always true.
Frankly, I think Fisher having the final say over Ireland in the Miami Dolphins case would have been correct.

yeah...i mean whats the harm...when the gm comes to you and says i want to trade for kyle orton and pay him $27 mil over 3 years like ireland would have done you have someone other than the owner with the brains to veto it...doesn't mean they're gonna butt heads over every decision...i keep reading how fish would take ireland as his gm and maybe that is the case but he's not so warm and fuzzy about the guy if he's not willing to let him have final say on personnel...but like i've been saying since we started looking for a replacement you want a name head coach who has a market you better be willing to let him have say over things or he's gonna walk...and fish did just that

and yeah the star of that green bay front office is not the hc or anyone other than ted thompson...he's by far the straw that stirs the drink

this whole head coach thing for me now at least has a puppet on a string kind of feel to me...

Yup.

Jimmy Johnson running Marino out of town.

67 STANG: you need to brush up on your dolphins history. jimmy johnson didnt "run" dan marino out of town [dan still lives there!]. dave wannstedt was coach when marino was ousted. dan marino was 3 years past needing to retire as his legs had NOTHING left. jimmie johnson new he had no chance with the fans and media if he traded or cut dan so he did the next best thing.... he tried to SAVE HIM!! how? by getting him into handing the ball off. by putting more of a run based offense in so grandpa dan didnt have to throw it 49 times a game. his leggs didnt have the push any longer to do the things he was accustomed to doing, and the int's were piling up!! marino fought jimmie every step of the way while he was trying desperately to save dans creer and reputation but dan is proud. he IS the best qb ever and no ones arm is close. its damn hard to say that is over for a guy like him with that kind of talent! he became his own worst enemy!!

jimmie left, dan marino was still there. long enough to be drubbed with 70 points by the immortal jay feidler! he should have never had to go out like that. DAVE WANSTEDT is the one who mercifully put dan to pasture.

PROOF: dan had an offer from the vikings to come be the starter on a power house team LOADED with prime talent when he wasnt retained by the finz. they had an all world o-line, top notch run game and aggressive defense. pro bowl wr's he hadnt seen since clayton and duper. they were TRUELY a qb away from the superbowl.

dan turned them down. why? he new it was over. he knew his body couldnt do the things it used to do with ease and he told the media just that after he turned down the gig. he was smart enough not to uproot his young family to go to minnassotta and fail. do you really think if dan had a WIFF of a chance for a ring he wouldnt have jumped? you think it doesnt kill him every day seeing far inferior qb's strutting around with there shiny ring? he just didnt have the leggs anymore to get enough push on the ball. it was OVER!!

all this dan was ran out of town from fans is NONSENSE!!! its un founded. fans need to get over the fact that dans career ended naturally. as most nfl players do. their bodies break, they get old. that is what happened to dan, not some demonic coach.

the troubles this team has is passing on half a dozen qb's over 10 years who could have taken us farther.

Blah, blah blah. Jackson is often very informative, but this is just more useless piling on Ross. Let's look at what Ross has tried to do with coaches. First, he tried to get Harbaugh, a guy who brought SF from nothingness to the NFC Championship in 1 year. Ah, but he hurt Sparano's feelings doing it. Boo fu***** hoo. Sparano is a guy who churns rosters constantly and yanks people around all the time, and talking w the Jets BEFORE their OC was gone.

Next he canned Sparano. Anybody disagree w that? Finally, he said no to giving a coach who hasn't won a playoff game in 8 years power over personnel. This doesn't even include the fact he paid for arguably the most prized offensive and defensive players available during his 1st year as owner. Now, why the constant beatdown by the media? It's mostly BS, as most of the crap you read nowadays is.

It's been rough for us as Dolfans for sure, but can we wait to see how Ross's first hire goes before slamming him.

Bottom line, it all starts with the QB. He is the face of the franchise. Who are the Pats without Brady? Does anyone really think that Welker would be anything more than a solid slot receiver on any other team. Could Danny Woodhead really get significant playing time on any other team? For that matter, as good as Gronkowski is, would his numbers be anywhere close to what they are this yr without Brady. Ditto for Hernandez.

i'll tell ya what i wouldn't have been all that gung ho about had fish come here...if its true gregg williams would have been a package deal as dc i'm not so warm and fuzzy about that...imo he's quite overrated...the last 2 years his d's have gotten torched by average offenses in the postseason on the road...at seattle and at san fran

look i love malcom jenkins as a free safety he's definitely one of the better ones in the league probably in the top 5 easy i'd say but what the hell are you doin manning up him repeatedly in the crunch time on vernon davis...i mean if theres one guy as a receiver you want to bracket or double all game long vernon davis is that damn guy...and alex smith torched them for it...everytime he ran a seam route into the middle of the field vertical he was open...every time...i mean don't let that guy beat you gregg williams...

I think the most telling part of that article was made by Manny Fernandez.....how can you have a coach that has no saying on the players he's been asked to win with?.....the way they have it now is Ireland picks the players HE wants and tells the coach he needs to win with those players?....the more I think about it the more I think that Ireland needs to go or else, we're not going to win anytime soon.I hope I'm wrong of course but that's the feeling I get.

Ozzy rules!!

Wanny, Cameron, and Saban all had final say on personnel and we see how well that worked out. I am glad that Ross stuck to his guns and insists that the GM covers personnel and the Coach runs the team. If the relationship is functional, the matter of final say won't ever matter as they will work together. The fact is Fisher was burnt by not having final say and we have been cremated by idiot coaches having final personnel authority.

Sorry these guys are living in their era of football, the times of a HC having final say are almost 100% gone. Not even Shula would have that type of control today in Miami.

Great article! I am confident on Ross and Ireland, Ross is in the learning curve and some pain has to come with it, but take a look overall, found an adviser, stick with their plan, NFL owners respect him. On the Ireland side, he has made good personnel evaluation (at the end Dez Bryant evaluation was correct, he is not a good teamate), not overpay on Orton fiasco was right also, we have very good players and very good assistants, we only need a HC that can manage game decisions and motivate players and personnel, additionally, the most important piece on the puzzle, a franchise QB, the only two names that bring me confidence are Payton and Andrew. Finally, some of you would like to kill me but I want to start the Jeff Ireland bandwagon, time will tell, but overall he has good insight from NFL management.
