Need to get rid of Caleb next year

My memory says raiders kicker janikowski struggled some his rookie year as many do. I predict he will be very good to great with a year under his belt. He missed a kick only 1 person in NFL history has made on Heinz field...plus he has had some injuries he's been struggling with.

When you draft and start a rookie kicker you're going to have to be willing to live through the growing pains. Frankly, Caleb's a bit of a question mark to me. I think Hopkins before his injury was a lock to make it as an NFL kicker and I would have gone all in with him. Caleb makes me a little more uncomfortable.

Well as of right now Sturgis blows nuts. You don't take a kicker in the 5th round and then have him be one of the worst kickers in the league. I would not cut him yet but he needs to improve quickly. If he is not doing much better during the off season then I think we have to grab some competition.

I don't really have a strong opinion on him either way based on this season, but people need to stop comparing him to Carpenter - there was 0% chance we were going to bring Carpenter back (based on his cap number AND production) regardless of drafting Sturgis.

In today's NFL, the 50 yard line is what the 40 yard line once was. The kick he missed against the Ravens wasn't a prayer, it was a very makable kick that he missed badly. If he makes it and the Phins go on to win, we have a 2 game lead for the six seed.

When you use a draft pick on a kicker that is a kick you expect him to make. He didn't and it may cost us the playoffs. They definitely need to bring in a UDFA for competition next July.

But he hasnt missed a makeable kick that cost a game yet, something Carp did all the time

Well we lost to the Ravens by 3...Sturgis missed a FG in that game. Lost to the Panthers by 4...Sturgis missed a FG in that game...changes the entire dynamic at the end of the game when all you need is a FG instead of a TD to win. Missed one and had another 39-yard FG blocked against New England...also changed the dynamic of the game as New England scored off both those misses...huge momentum in their favor.

When the margin of victory is as slim as it has been for this team, every point counts.

And to whoever said his season is like Greg Zuerlein's you're wrong. Zuerlein missed 8 FGs total that year but only 2 from 49 yards or less. Six of his misses were from 50+ where he was 7/13...still above 50% where Sturgis is well below 50% from 50+.

We cant sit here and pin losses on the damn kicker. We laid eggs in the second half of both the pats and panthers games, while taking a commanding lead into halftime. How that falls on the kicker is beyond me...

I am sorry but this guy is awful, he has no confidence and constantly misses every game. Hopefully we will be able to find a different kicker for next year, he is just not panned for the NFL it seems. What are your opinions on him?

When you draft a kicker in any round you expect much more than what Sturgis has given us. He is as bad as carp was last year. I hold my breath on every one of his kicks. Same as I did last year with carp. Ireland blows during draft and this pick was the icing on the cake. There are probably 10 fa kickers out there now who are better than Sturgis. Don't ask me to name them but I'm sure there are guys out there who didn't hook up with a team this year who can do better. You cannot afford to miss kicks when our games are so close. He looks like he has no confidence at all and one poster was right, it started in balt game. Missed 57 yarder badly then shanked a kickoff. That did it for him.

It falls on the kicker when it is his job to score points by kicking a field goal and he misses. When the offense gets him into range and hands it over to him its up to him. Nobody is perfect and I don't expect him to make every kick but he does miss to much.

I don't like the guy but I suspect he will pan out and next year at this time it won't be an issue.

Sturgis' mechanics aren't as good as Carpenter's, which will lead to erratic stretches.

I've noticed lately that he has resorted to line drive tendencies on his kickoffs, probably in frustration that the number of touchbacks had declined. That's very familiar, like a golfer changing to a driver with less loft. It shouldn't be an issue this week at home but in Buffalo a week later I would expect the lower trajectory kickoffs.

yeah for people to sayhe hasn't cost us anything yet is pretty crazy...his misses have mattered

Per ESPN.com

"Caleb Sturgis, kicker: Although Sturgis does not deserve all the blame, the rookie missed another kick Sunday. Miami’s coaching staff erroneously decided to try a 52-yard field goal, in the snow, on the open end of the stadium. Sturgis’ kick fell well short and allow Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu and its defense to make a pretty good attempt at returning the ball back for a touchdown. After making his first 10 attempts, Sturgis now is 15 for his last 22 attempts. He has missed at least one field goal in six of his last eight games."

Not Good

You guys can make all the excuses you want for Sturgis. He has one job and only one job. Kick the football.

When you are asked to only do only one single thing in your career, you better be damn good at doing it. He has not been good, at the one thing he must be good at. Sturgis has proven nothing to me. I agree we should give him some more time, but just like last year, lets give him some competition.
Real competition this time. Everyone knew carp was gone when they drafted the kid.

Actually that was very good for us. Had Polamalu allowed the ball to just hit the ground there would have been about 18 seconds left in the half and Pitt would have had the ball at the 42-yard line with two timeouts left. They would have been about 25 yards from being able to attempt a FG before the end of the half.
