NEWS: Chester Cut, Feeley Demoted, Gus Named Starter

Becasue they can bring him back after week 1 at a reduced salary. Vets are going to be cut, sit out week 1 and then resigned. Go to nfl.com and watch that Adam Schefler video, he talks about this issue. Good move, because he is not ready to play anyway. Get some cap relief instead of having him on PUP for 6 weeks. They will resign him at a reduced salary and get cap relief from the original contract. Good business move by Saban and Mueller!!!

That's what I take it as Phinman. Might be an effort to free up some room and get someone's contract extended or reworked. I know they're keeping an eye on McMichael's contract situation. To date I have speculated they will attempt to franchise him next offseason and then trade him.

That's a good question. I don't know how much salary he is taking up, but it could be for the purpose of clearing some room for someone we are looking to sign...?

I believe you are correct. As KB stated, he isn't taking up a roster spot. I am certain that he is playing for more than the vet min and therefore is taking up too much cap space for the little or no production that he is currently able to offer the team. The fact that he was hurt last season and now again this season leaves him little bargaining room in this situation. He will likely be forced to take a susbtantial pay cut or he may be left to retire (as I am pretty sure this is his last stop in the NFL). I would rather see him on the field for us though.

The Chester situation has been strange since the beginning of training camp.Remember the reports that he was going to make an injury claim against the Fins. Then that died down and he was seen spinning in training camp and then there was all the brave talk that he was coming back.

Apparently the Fins never thought so because they were seriousy interested in Corey Simon and acquired Wright in the meanwhile.

One down, one to go. My dream expulsions were Larry Chester and Derrius Thompson. Still confident Saban shares my handicap.

I hope we don't resign Chester. IMO his reputation here overwhelmingly exceeds his ability, past or present. When I watch the attacking upfield DL play in Saban's scheme it makes absolutely no sense how Chester fits in. Heck, even an aging Traylor has tons more lateral agility and disruptive potential than Chester. We can do much better than Larry Chester, even on the waiver wire.

They cant bring him back at a lower salary.....he was already making the league minimum ($540K) The only money saved would be in whatever games he misses while recovering.

Salary 540K, amortized bonus 880K, cap hit 1.42M, dead cap after 6/1 880K, signed thru 2006

with the injury settlement, there's no telling where Chester will end up. He may even sit out the whole season. I doubt that. I have a feeling that by week 2 he's feeling pretty good and Phili comes in with all that cap room and offers him something decent....nothing big mind you but more than the vet min. that I would imagine that we'd take him back at.

I'm also going to have to assume that vickerson's leg is better than expected with this settlement. Then again...that may have nothing to do with it.

You apparently also have very little sense of Saban's scheme. Chester's style of play most definately has a place in Saban's defense... Nose Tackle. Keith Traylor is the exact same kind of player, same physical attributes, everything.

What's the point of cutting Chester when he's on the PUP list? He's not taking up a roster spot at this time. Oh well.

There could be several reasons. I'll randomly brainstorm here.

1) You'd like to say that re-signing him to a lower end deal will create cap space in the long haul. Chester was to count $1.42 million against the cap this year. But we take an $880K hit for releasing him. So we gain a net of $540K this year. If we re-sign him in a week or two (as his agent speculates), we're still gonna end up paying more in the end.

2) The Dolphins are freeing up the money to sign someone else.

3) The Dolphins think Chester can be ready before Week 6 and are giving themselves the opportunity to play him before then.

4) Chester no longer fits into the teams plans (i.e. they don't want to have to release another lineman currently on the roster when Chester is ready) and they're trying to give him the opportunity to explore other options without disrespecting him.

yes, but he still had another year on his contract that raised his salary..to what...I don't know but know he'll only count just over 800,000a against the cap I believe.

good call on the 880k......nice timing....great minds think alike..
:D

I think some of it has to do with the fact that perhaps Saban doesn't see Chester being on the team in 2006 and it's better to cut him now..just a thought.

Maybe something to do with the salary cap? Do players on the PUP list still count against the cap if they make it into the top 51 salaries on the team? If they get game checks during their time on the PUP (which I bet they do) then I believe it would make sense that they still count on the cap if they're in the top 51 group. If they do count, it is easy to see why he was cut.

I think this is the just of it, he would still count against the top 51 because of his salary and status with the team.

Well, even with him getting the bonus money...we will be paying even more since we will reach an injury settlement with him. That doesn't count against the cap ( i don't think ) but nonetheless it is money being paid. Chester had good things to say apparently though so I could see him coming back after he gets healthy and can pass a physical.

I liked his dedication and whther he meant to or not, he became a vocal leader on the front line. Personally, due to his work ethic I would love to see him come back and teach Manny Wright how to work hard on every play and how to get in shape.
