NEWS: Chester Cut, Feeley Demoted, Gus Named Starter

I think this is the just of it, he would still count against the top 51 because of his salary and status with the team.

the rule of 51 is only in effect till tomorrow. After that, all 53 players plus IR and PUP count against the cap. Basically, if you are on the team in any capacity, your salary counts.

The first cutdown date comes on Tuesday when all teams must be down to 65 players (not including exemptions such as injuries, NFL Europe allocations, etc). Sept. 4 is the final cutdown to 53 players with no exemptions. On Sept. 5, teams can establish an eight-man practice squad.

no exemptions means the nfl europe players. I'm not doubting you at all, I just thought I heard that it was opening day.....thx for the link

Im checking on it.....I was sure that I heard that the rule of 51 ended when the final roster cuts happened, but you could be correct in that it may end on opening day.......Its difficult to locate in the CBA but Im still looking.

EDIT: CALL THE NEWSPAPERS>>>I WAS WRONG!!!

Page 99 (a) Paragraph 5.

(i) The highest applicable Salary set forth in Paragraph 5 of the NFL Player Contract shall be included in Team Salary in the year earned, except that, between March 1 and the first day of the regular playing season, only the following amounts from Paragraph 5 shall be included for players whose Player Contracts are not among the Team’s 51 highest valued Player Contracts, tenders and Offer Sheets (as determined under this Section 7):

First day of regular season is Thursday, Sept. 8th... Oakland at New England

If I'm not mistaken, by cutting a Vet player before week one, you can bring them back after week one, but their season salary is no longer guarenteed. If Chester were signed on week one, he would be paid for the whole season even if cut later.

What's the point of cutting Chester when he's on the PUP list? He's not taking up a roster spot at this time. Oh well.

Sounds like theyre giving him the opportunity to find work elsewhere, rather than rot on the POP.
