With everyone hemming and hawing over who will be the next headcoach of the Dolphins, I would just like to add something that should be quite obvious to everyone: The headcoach doesn't matter, QBs do!

You can look no further than Indianapolis...

The same coach who got to a Superbowl his first season, is now winless. What changed? Well, that's obvious. Manning is out. Same coach, completely opposite results.

Yes, there are some coaches that can win based on superior game planning, etc. but it isn't a necessity as long as you have an elite QB.

The fact is, Tony "fistpump" Sparano could probably take a team to the Superbowl if he had a Manning-type QB to work with. Is McCarthy in GB some kind of genius? No, he was a former no name coordinator from a losing team who got a shot with a team who lucked out when it came to QBs on his watch. McCarthy without Favre/Rodgers is Sparano, and vice-versa.

So, WHO CARES who the next coach is? It won't matter!

Get a franchise QB (a true, elite QB) and everything else will fall into place.

This football isn't like the other sports in which unless you have a hof head coach it really doesn't matter who it is. Football the coach is the man that sets the tone for the entire team, more so than the quarterback. The Patriots are a smart creative team because Bill Belichick is a smart creative head coach. The Steelers are a no nonsense blue collar team because that is the persona Mike Tomlin embodies. The Dolphins are a spineless push over because of they have a lame duck head coach. It could be argued that a franchise QB is more important than a good head coach (see the Colts) but to say its meaningless is ignorant. Peyton Manning never won anything with Jim Mora, but he won with an all time great head coach in Tony Dungy.

Yea,ask the Bills and 49ers that...

The 49ers are a unique case considering that they have a former #1 pick at QB who never lived up to potential. Alex Smith was very young and raw coming out of college. He came from a spread offense and went through a new offensive system every year, all under defensive-minded HCs. His best year prior to Harbaugh was with Norv Turner, another QB guru. Harbaugh is making the difference with him because he is a QB guy who is giving Smith the proper tutelage to work in a pro-system. It would have been interesting to see what Harbaugh could have done with Henne.

A guy like Luck, already schooled in the pro system, wouldn't have the same adjustment issues as Smith in the NFL. As such, you could pair Luck with almost any coach and get success.

The Bills, I still maintain, are a bit of a fluke... I think you will see some more losses begin to pile up. I think they go 8-8 when all is said and done. Fitzpatrick is a smart QB, but limited. Likewise, Chan Gailey isn't some genius HC, otherwise he wouldnt have been run out of town in places like GT.

Coaches do matter, just look at the 49ers who have the same QB as last year. A coach can change the whole culture of the team.

Terrible post - of all the major American sports, coaching matters most in football.

So why are the 49'ers doing so well all of a sudden?

Look...there is no black and white answer on this. If you have a great QB, you can still have problems if the coach sucks. Look no farther than Marino...

On the other hand, you can have a team playing above their abilities if you have a great coach...look at 49ers now...Look at TB with Dilfer...

One can destroy or make a team...you need both to be in the SB (can't explaing Dilfer though...)

This is just crazy talk lol.

Coaches define how a team practices. Without coaches it's just a bunch of dude's out there with no direction you need a great blend of both.

How did you ever convince yourself that coaches don't matter?

Caldwell was a caretaker, that team was built to be an annual contender by Dungy. Even w/ Manning Indy took a step back last year and many expected that slide to continue. Take away a great QB and don't have a decent replacement and this is what happens. w/ a competent QB Indy would be around a .500 team right now.

Yea but the coaches before them could not win with the same qb's?

Raiders are winning with Campbell... Jim Zorn could not win with him..

Terrible thread. Coaches matter A LOT. Look at the Lions and 49ers.

No, coaches don't matter, TALENT matters.

Are you referring to the SAME Jim Schwartz who went 2-14 and 6-10 with the Lions? You know why the Lions are winning this year? Because their franchise QB is finally HEALTHY! That, and they loaded themselves with defensive talent. Schwartz isn't willing them to victory. If he had that power, he wouldn't have gone 2-14 with the team.

Stop drinking in the middle of the day brother. The Lions are winning because they now have a great QB, the best WR in the game, a top notch DL and a better supporting cast. All being directed by much better coaching.

As I asked on another thread.....so by your theory if you made Dave Wannedstet the coach of the Patriots they would be just as good as they are now?? Please think about that before you answer!!
