NEWSFLASH: Coaches Don't Matter!!

Childress was never a good coach, I don't know why you'd even bring him up. If Childress proves anything, it's that good coaching DOES matter. That Vikings team should have been a Super Bowl contender, but was hamstrung by awful coaching.

Have Phillip Rivers trade places with Tom Brady and Rivers goes down as one of the best QBs (or THE best?) of all time imo. Rivers keeps the Chargers in the hunt but Norv Turner keeps them from being elite.

If you want to have a chance at a SB you need both a great HC and a great QB, although I can think of examples of less than great QBs winning the SB but have any bad head coaches ever won it?

A new coach is needed here to establish a new culture of MENTAL TOUGHNESS!

They were 10 yards away from the SUPERBOWL when Childress had an elite Favre! So you are saying that team, with not-awful coaching, would have been the greatest team of all-time? Because even with "awful coaching", as you say, they were a fart away from a Superbowl berth. I think that pretty much makes my case for me...

To be fair Belichick was a failure as a HC w/o Brady.

Hey, I agree, but honestly, it doesnt really matter much unless we get an elite QB. If we don't get an elite QB, I dont care who the next coach is, they WILL fail.

BOTH are needed.

It is about time this franchise does both EFFECTIVELY!

Bad head coaches who won a Superbowl:

Weeb Ewbank
Don McCafferty
Mike Ditka
George Seifert
Barry Switzer
Brian Billick

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Super_Bowl_head_coaches

All these guys won a SB, but failed hard afterward. Heck, Seifert eventually went nearly WINLESS with the Panthers...

A case could even be made for Jon Gruden.

Dumbest thread ever. Look at the Bills and Sf. those teams merk you thread.

Listen, im not discounting the importance of a coach but ill take the franchise qb anytime. Case in point. The great and all powerful Bill Belichick, who's previous head coaching tenure was as that highly successful coach in Cleveland, leading that juggaurnaut of a team to a fantastic record of 36-44 over 5 seasons.

His first year in New England he leads them to a 6-10 record. His next year he starts off at 1-3 including a loss to the Bungles back when they were the Bungles. There were rumblings in Boston about getting rid of him. Many people in new england thought he was a glorified defensive coordinator. I was living there at the time so i heard the rumblings and read the articles. Fans werent happy with him.

They replace one player that year and subsequently win a super bowl.

Coaches matter............elite franchise qbs matter more

THANK YOU! This is what I am trying to say. You could time travel and bring back a young Shula to coach this team and it wont matter unless you get him an elite QB. And even WITH that, there is no guarantee, given he had Marino and never got the ring.

No, coaches don't matter, TALENT matters.

Are you referring to the SAME Jim Schwartz who went 2-14 and 6-10 with the Lions? You know why the Lions are winning this year? Because their franchise QB is finally HEALTHY! That, and they loaded themselves with defensive talent. Schwartz isn't willing them to victory. If he had that power, he wouldn't have gone 2-14 with the team.
Except the Lions have improved every year since he got there. Stafford put them over the top, but coaching is what's giving them direction.
