NFL and NFLPA to negotiate for 7 straight days

I think that the arbitration move is a good idea. Get someone who has no personal stake in the middle to find the common ground that both sides can agree on like rookie salaries. Get them to agree on that and then move on to the next easiest area. This way they try to get some positive momentum right up front and save the really hardest sticking points to last when they have agreed on 90% of everything else.

Small correction: it's mediation, not arbitration. Both sides can choose to ignore whatever the recommendations are.

The whole thing makes me want to puke!!!! They are talking about 9 BILLION DOLLARS!!!! Are F**ING KIDING ME! They all should look around the world and look at whats happining! IMO both sides should be ashamed!

I will keep watching like an idiot but I think we should all be ashamed already. We pay for TV so we can watch them *****. Amazing. We are idiots.

Thanks for the correction. I did use the wrong term though I did know that it's non binding. I still like the idea of them bringing in a neutral party to help wade through all the posturing.

I read the owners get paid the TV revenues whether there is ball or not - they have a grip with their TV contracts paying them - if this is true - the players are in a rock and a hard place on this one.

Like it or not the owners are in serious control - the players best not piss them off too much...

Cromartie was honest when he said let me play - he has a lot of child support to come up with - listening to other former players like Collingsworth said the players don't save they spend spend spend and they will come crawling back, the owners certainly know this - this is true in life many of us are financially over-extended

They already do it anyways but the players will be swinging the cup soon - pimping a poem, song or their worthless autograph at any Mall or Piggly Wiggly that will have them...

The players do have one ace in the hole. W/O a new CBS, the NFL cannot continue to use NFLPA members names or likenesses in merchandising. The last figures I saw were somethging like 40% of items could be in play.

The Owners don't have to do diddly squat to get paid from their TV contracts - I don't think they really care

The owners have to pay back any money received from the Networks for games not played. The latest is now the Networks are contesting paying them if games are not actually played as the owners have to pay back unplayed games yes, but over time. Which = complete BS. In case anyone did not know, the owners FIRST signed the guaranteed money deal with the networks then shortly there after, opted out of the CBA agreement. Nice.

Can someone explain to me why they really left the discussions till the end of the season? I understand that the previous arrangement is due to expire soon, but in my experiences, most unions try to get the new agreement in place before the current one expires, so there is no hiccup in the workplace so to speak.

Does anyone know?

thanks

I'm of the opinion that it's better for the fans in all sports when the owners come out on top.

The owners are adament that the players are getting to large of a percentage of the 9 billion in revenue the league generates. When they opted out of the CBA a year ago, it was a given that they would lock the players out. Now that the deadline is approaching, I am not surprised to see a flurry of talks. Obviously there will be concessions on both sides with not only the revenue split but the 18 game schedule the owners want. I am willing to bet that they stay with 16 in the end and they'll meet halfway on the revenue. Just my opinion.

I think players get paid enough as it is. Just give them financial protection from injuries (health care for life or something along those lines), a rookie cap, and move on.
