CC played outside the Tackle out of necessity and that made Hand have to play more snaps. The numbers are skewed. Better to look at 23' when Sieler and Wilkins were both playing 850-900+ snaps.
Ideally, I'd love a guy to play 850 with Sieler. Then another guy to replace Hand and play 250 snaps. Can carry 5 but only 4 really play and 2 play a ton. Phillips, Chubb, and Chop can all play outside the tackle but even play some inside, depending on package, down and distance, situations, ect.
I thought Sieler and Wilkins were overused in 2023/22. Wilkins led the league in IDL snaps, and Sieler was 4th. They were second and 5th in snaps in 2022. No other team leaned on their top two guys to that degree. Sieler's snaps went down from 924 to 749 last season, and I think that level of snap load only prolongs his career and makes him more effective when he is on the field. Fangio was averse to using Hand in 2023, and he's not that bad a player. I wish we'd re-signed him. The snap counts of Wilkins and Sieler in 2022 indicate Boyer did the same thing. Davis played 611, and Jenkins played 270, as the 3rd and 4th guys in 2022.
I preferred Weaver's rotation of the IDL better. IMO, ideally, draft a guy to take about the same number of snaps as CC. 616. Then, another to play Hand's level, about 580. Keep Sieler at the mid 700s level. This way, if one of the top two gets hurt and has to miss a lot of time, your backups are better prepared to step in and play more snaps.
When Sieler missed two games, we lost them both, because Hand and Jones, while functional, were not as effective at being disruptive as Sieler. Hand essentially got Sieler's snap load in those two games and played 20 or so above his average in each. Not only was there a drop in quality of play, Hand is no Sieler, it's not unreasonable to surmise he was gassed by the 4th quarter. They couldn't get off the field vs AZ and Buffalo.
In the old days, we seldom ever knew who our backup DTs were. They didn't play defense unless a starter was out injured. I'd have to look it up to determine who backed up Fernandez and Heinz in the early 70s. These days, generally speaking, it seems to me most teams prefer to rotate 3-4 guys on a consistent basis.
Since we usually play a 3 man line, I consider their snaps equally. Chubb, Phillips, and Chop, along with the other Edges are considered separately.
