NFL instituting "N Word" penalty due to Bullygate?

Its crap. If Miami get further penalties out of this fiasco, that will be a bigger disgrace.

The NFL appears to have the idea that sticks and stones wont break no bones but words will always hurt me. What a load of crap

They'd better not.

And I'm not saying that because I give a **** about the rule. It's flat out retarded on their part if they try to implement it. Just imagine a ref throwing a flag and walking out to the middle of the field during a game to announce "15 yards against the offense for the use of the N-word". Can you say "Laughing stock"?

They aren't going to announce it like that. I'm sure it will simply be announced as unsportsmanlike conduct and left at that.

My question about it is what is the burden of proof? Does the ref have to hear it? Does someone just have to accuse someone else? If the ref has to hear it, it's never going to get called. If an accusation is enough, every third and long someone's going to make the accusation.

Ha ha - you missed some...Should we name them??

Wonder if this applies more to Ni**er or Ni*ga.

Then again, guess Spic, Cracker, Chink etc must also be added to the list.

Every curse word while we are at it.

No profanity on the field.

For the first time in my life I like Wilbon!

That guy was such a homey for the Redskins - but he's right!

Can a guy call a player on the field a yellowskin? "Hey mr ref that yellowskin is hanging all over me - call something!", Or "that brownskin is holding me!"

Was watching BSPN & Wilbon was going off on this. Saying NFL hypocrites with "Redskins" and goes on to drop the N bomb on live TV.

I fear what the NFL will be like in 5-10 years. It's going to be terrible.

You know what's going to happen, right? Division on the line, we stop the Pats on 4th down at midfield up by two w :20 left in the game. But wait! Flag! Walt Coleman calls unsportsmanlike conduct on Wheeler for allegedly calling Gronkowski a "dumb pollock". Gostowski (another pole) trots on and boots a 52 yd game winner sending this board into the worst frenzy since Big Bens do-over fumble at our goal line.

the whole thing is stupid IMO

hate to get into political things on this board, but I find it hypocritical Goodell is penalizing players for this because it is "offensive", yet let Dan Snyder and himself make millions based on a very offensive word.

As for practicality, adds way too much discretion to the officials IMO.

This rule will have basically have no impact on game. Who cares really, how dare they take the n word out of foobtball

The word should not be used at anytime. I think that it is embarrassing as Black men, many of them college "educated", have to be told that using a racial slur to address one another is acceptable. People of other races do not use racial slurs to address one another. We need to stop making excuses for stupidity. And yes I am Black.

I would very much like to have the word removed from our vocabulary, but I don't really trust NFL referee's to be policing the use of racial epithets.

Many assume that the effort of the NFL to eradicate racial slurs from the playing field emanates from the Richie Incognito/Jonathan Martin situation, which included among other things a voice message from Incognito containing the N-word.

But the push comes not from the Dolphins’ situation but from an incident involving an official and a man who plays for the team whose name many believe is a racial slur.

In November, Redskins tackle Trent Williams claimed that umpire Roy Ellison directed improper language toward Williams. The Fritz Pollard Alliance argued that Ellison’s words were preceded by Williams directing the N-word to Ellison. Williams, who like Ellison is African-American, denied the allegation.

Something tells me Little Danny Snyder is getting an earful from the other owners and the NFL and they are probably telling him we don't care what you do or how you do it but you will announce you are changing the name before training camp.... my guess is they will change it before 2015

I'm sure there will be a discrimination lawsuit because blacks will be disproportionately flagged compared to whites. Don't fret, racism will keep the n-word in football permanently.

At its core, this is a group of white men telling a group of black men that they can't use a variation of a slur that white men used to dehumanize black men and women.

Seriously, how does a white man (with a straight face) say to a black man, 'Um, excuse me, but you can't use the N-word'? If this comes to pass, they'll likely make Merton Hanks make the announcement.

The Fritz Pollard Alliance is the group pushing this...
