No Power Back? Epic Fail, Guess Daniel Thomas is back...ugh

I'm with you. Daniel Thomas certainly isn't as bad as this board makes him out to be.

If the play is designed for the ball to be handed off to Thomas, he stops, tries to decide between left or right, take a few steps, then fall over sideways, then yeah, he's perfect.

You can't run play-action with a power back? Doesn't having a scat back who only loves to cut outside "tip your hand"?

Having Tanny try to pick up every short situation risks getting him hurt.

And yet Brady doesn't have this problem. Get low and behind your guard. Last years guards were to busy being pushed into the QBs lap.

Brady doesn't have what problem? QB sneaking? How many did he attempt last year?

By 2012 he had nearly 102 attempts in his career, which spans 13 seasons.

Actually based on Fox Sports situational splits, Brady was:

1st Down (0-2 yards) = 1 rush, -2 yards, 0 TD's
2nd Down (0-2 yards) = 2 rushes, 4 yards, 0 TD's
3rd Down (0-2 yards) = 1 rush, 3 yards, 0 TD's
4th Down (0-2 yards) = 3 rushes, 2 yards, 0 TD's

So as you can see he rushed on "short" distances a whopping 7 times. Call me crazy, but there are quite a few more "short" distance downs than that in an entire NFL season and there's a reason why there aren't more QB sneaks.

IDK the about the validity of your stats. Because I watched at least 4 games of Brady's last year, and he did his quick snap QB sneak for a first down at least once per game. Against MIA alone we are sure to see it once a game.

By comparison .....

Blount 17 attempts
Ridley 16 attempts
Bolden 11 attempts
Vereen 3 attempts

Total Attempts by RB: 50

This doesn't include the times they passed on that down (29) ..... so that gives them a grand total of 86 "short" yardage situations (0-2 yards). So Brady ran it on those downs 8% of the time.

Decided to take a look at Knowshon Moreno's stats ..... and actually there was an article on Phinsider about it. Raw numbers on 1-3 yards shake down like this:

41 conversions, 56 attempts, 7 TD's

Our backs in 2013:

Miller - 5 conversions, 17 attempts, 0 TD's
Thomas - 11 conversions, 18 attempts, 2 TD's

Phinsider made quick to point out something which you don't get from the raw #'s and that is how they lined up.

Last season, Miami used an entirely different short yardage philosophy than Denver did. Rarely did they spread the defense out, allegedly one of the key tenets of Mike Sherman's offensive scheme, but instead used two- and three-tight end formations often with a fullback, an extra offensive lineman or both.

Thomas and Miller mostly ran in short distance downs in "heavy" sets. Ironically Thomas (who I don't personally care for) has numbers that become quite a bit better in lieu of having less space to work with.

Lastly,

The positive news is that the 2013 Eagles offense, in which Lazor served as the quarterbacks coach, led the league in rushing utilizing similar concepts that the Broncos did. They used the short passing game, versatile personnel groupings and quick tempo to manipulate defenders in space and create favorable alignment advantages.

Damien Williams - RB - Dolphins

Dolphins signed Oklahoma RB Damien Williams.

Williams (5-foot-11 1/8, 222) spent just two years with the Sooners before getting kicked off the team last November for multiple team violations. He finished his brief career with 290 carries for 1,499 yards (5.17 YPC) and 18 touchdowns, adding 43 receptions. Williams' off-field issues are plenty, but he has 4.45 speed and short-area burst (10-foot-1 broad jump) with quick feet and a body to handle large workloads. He's also a very good receiver. If Williams can get his head on straight, he could become an intriguing Dynasty sleeper. Knowshon Moreno and Lamar Miller sit weakly atop the depth chart in Miami.

Damien Williams (RB Oklahoma) vs Texas Tech 2013 you tube video of Damien Williams is impressive

There's a highlight vid of Williams somewhere on here. I don't care for those things because it's not really a true showing of the player. The holes are huge, tackles are missed, etc.
