I thought of another reason why someone might use port numbers to call the images....

Logging.... Why would you want a log filled with image requests? Port them to a non standard port and don't log requests on that port....

Just a hunch.

We use a port to have another, lighter version of apache run in the background to handle all images. The "os" is called thttpd. The idea didn't work out as planned because some firewalls are stingy and don't allow access to different ports. Right now, I shut down thttpd and am using apache to run images...
