Nothing against MG but we knew from the start he wasn’t the world’s greatest blocker. Can only go by their actions and they didn’t draft a kicker or LB but resigned what they had but did draft another TE.
Wondering if they are waiting to see how Hunter Long goes as a potentially more all round player. Perhaps not as good a receiver but better blocker.
If so trade or rec comp pick if he leaves at end of the season.
Or it is simply still on the to do list depending on how their cap space looks over the next couple of years.

Now, Gesicki has made some great catches. Beautiful one's. But, his blocking still isn't convincing enough as a legit TE.

I think the drafting of Long has pushed him this off-season. Kelce had great things to say about him. Perhaps, working with the other top TE's in the league will improve his blocking ability.

Either way, the writing is on the wall. Either be a complete TE this year or your replacement will.

I think they drafted Long to be Gesicki’s replacement after the 2021 season. Gesicki will likely be looking to be paid as If he is one of the top TE’s in the league and I think they prefer a TE who is an excellent receiver as well as an excellent blocker. I think they believe Long can be a better all around TE than Gesicki and that is likely why they aren’t attempting to sign Gesicki to a new contract at this time.

If Long doesn’t turn out to be the player they believe he can be, they can then try to sign Gesicki to a new contract or keep him by making him their franchise player after next season. I think the odds are against Gesicki being on the roster beyond next season but I would love to see them keep him if at all possible. He might not be the blocking TE they want but he does offer skills in the passing game that no other TE now on the team appear able to duplicate.

I have made this point in multiple threads on the subject, but there are a lot of questions about his role in our offense this year. He is basically a 6’6” ~250lbs slot WR. He is very good at the things he does well. However, how do we get him on the field with Parker, Waddle and Fuller at the same time (particularly if he isn’t playing as the in-line TE)? I think the staff wants to see how he fits in with our new offense in terms of usage and targets before we offer him a contract extension. Hunter Long could very well end up being a solid, cost efficient replacement for him down the road. It’s tough to lose talent you draft, but the salary cap doesn’t allow you to toss out massive contracts with zero thought for the future (unless you are the Saints).

It would be terrible to lose Gesicki for a comp pick. If FloCo doesn't think he fits thier scheme then they need to trade him for something better than a late 3rd.
I don’t think Gesicki has the value many fans on here believe he does in a trade. First of all he is basically a one dimensional TE. He is a decent receiver but lacks the blocking skills teams look for in a starting TE. He is also in the final year of his contract and I doubt any team is going to give up a high draft pick for him when they can just wait until after next season and sign him without having to give up any draft picks for him.

If the Dolphins did attempt to trade him, I wouldn’t be surprised if the best offer they got for him was a 4th or 5th round pick. I just don’t see any team offering them a pick in the first 3 rounds in a trade for a player who would be a free agent after the 2021 season.

The Dolphins would benefit the most if they don’t intend signing him after the season by letting him sign with another team and hopefully receiving a late third round compensation pick for him.

Hunter Long was the shot across MGs bow - thing is he shouldn’t have needed a shot across the bow

Any-who you can’t keep everyone you draft -

I'm certainly scratching my head here. Maybe Flo doesn't put much stock in TE's that aren't good blockers? Only thing that makes sense.

I've been saying this for months. I think Gesicki is a very good tight end. I just don't think he's what Miami has in mind long-term.

We all knew he wasn't a great blocker when we drafter him. Why are some of you making such a big deal out of it. There are other mainly receiving TEs that couldn't block for crap that had awesome careers. See Jimmy Grahm

He's a good player for sure. Square peg is all, for what this offense is to become. Ck made that point, that the 3 WR offense they wanna be typically doesn't have a Gesicki type.
