More good news........

Manson happy at CB

Markus Manson came to Florida to carry the rock. That plan didn't work out and now the former tailback is trying to re-invent himself this spring as a cornerback.

"I love my new position," he said. "It gives me an opportunity to just be an athlete and just run. My goal is to become a starter. I'm going to get better and help this team out."

Manson said the idea to switch positions came from co-defensive coordinator Charlie Strong shortly after UF's victory over Ohio State in the national title game.

"He came up to me and said, 'Why don't you give cornerback a shot, because the running back thing isn't working out for you,'" Manson said. "I told him I'd give it a shot. What do I have to lose?"

Manson said he's had a difficult time early in spring covering speedy wide receivers Andre Caldwell and Percy Harvin.

"If I keep going against them every day I'll get better because they're the No. 1 wide receivers in the nation," he said. "They're going to keep pushing me and I'm going to get better."

More CB news.........

Rickerson practices

Jacques Rickerson (knee) practiced for the first time Monday and Meyer said he's seen a significant change in the redshirt freshman from St. Augustine.

"He's probably got the best feet of all those corners," Meyer said. "In the fall, he was not a very hard worker and the (knee) injury set him back.

"He seems to have a little better attitude now. I think he sees that if he practices hard he's going to start at cornerback at the University of Florida."

No redshirt for Haden

Another young cornerback who has caught Meyer's eye is true freshman Joe Haden, an early enrollee who has been working with the No. 1 defense.

"He's doing good. He's going to to play next season," Meyer said. "That's a given. He will not redshirt next year. I like him a lot. He has a great attitude and he's a great effort guy."

Cam Newton is a big fella!

Thanks for all the news motion! Newton is gunna be a really good QB for us, but its not gunna be this year. Its hard to ask alot from a Freshamn QB. I think even tho Waggener is out of the Spring he will be the #2 guy. Also Percy Harvin is really going to turn into a star this year.

Rumor: Potential Bad News!

The previously mentioned Mon Williams was supposedly hurt in practice yesterday after getting completely rocked by Brandon Spikes. Rumor has it that its an ACL injury. Not good.

On a brighter note, Chevon Walker had "The best practice by a RB since Meyer arrived" yesterday.

Oh no that would really stink! Mon Williams is gunna be the starting back for the Gators one day. The SEC better whatch out for Brandon Spikes! Glad to hear about Chevon Walker who has a mix of speed and power himself. Whats the word on Rainey?

It was a harder hitting day than maybe most expected on the practice field in Gainesville Wednesday and still a lot of sloppy play to go along with the intense hitting. The Gators had a strong practice and a couple of new names showed up on the radar and may have made a move on the depth chart. Here is our account of spring practice on day five.

They did a half line drill with three offensive linemen against three defensive players. Most of that is on video and you can see it for yourself. I thought the offensive line showed some great push almost on every play and drove the defenders out of the play most of the time. The depth and strength of the entire offensive line is starting to shine through and young players like Michael and Maurkice Pouncey are starting to get noticed, even with all of the depth. I suggest you watch the video.

I also filmed a good deal of the open field tackling drill and that was a little more in favor of the defense. There were some nice hits and runs, seen on video and the big one came form one of the starting linebackers.
A.J. Jones had the hit of the day seen in the video clips. He went one on one with Mon Williams and it was probably the hardest hit I have seen at practice in a long time. Mon took some time off and shook it off, even jogging a bit, but didn’t return to the drill. He got back in action in the running game exercises that followed and took one step before collapsing to the ground with a knee injury. My thought is the real injury happened in the collision and then he finished it trying to take a full speed step in the running game action. Again, that is just my opinion.
Defense started strong in the running game drill stuffing the first five plays or so, then the offense started making things happen and the big mashers up front started really making some holes.
Kestahn Moore in one of those runs saw a lane open up by the linemen and cut back for a big time gain. It was what you want from the zone blocking scheme. Start one direction and run with the blocking, then see the crease and cut back.
On one play during the drill, Brandon James slowed up before the end and he got clobbered. Coach Drayton was running right behind him and chewed him out for not finishing and telling him “see, that is what happens when you don’t finish!ââ‚Â

Did he enroll early? I haven't heard anything about him in spring practice reports.

I just posted something that said he was a visito, So I guess he will be here this summer. I thought he came in early. Oh well. I can't wait for this year to start. Spikes is the real deal and he will be great. When he does become great everyone remember that me and Motion told you so. :D

I stand corrected, it was Jones not Spikes that rocked Williams.

After you read this what unit sounds like it returned all the starters?

Drew Miller should not have been too surprised when the Florida coaches approached him last month about the possibility of moving to center.

He fits the mold.

Just like his good buddy Steve Rissler did a year ago. In perhaps the position switch of the year, Rissler went from a solid guard to an excellent center and team leader in just a matter of months after making the move.

Is Miller the next Rissler in the middle of the UF line?

"(Miller) is an athletic guy," UF coach Urban Meyer said. "He's tough, he's got great size. He fits the mold. He's the one guy that can play a lot of positions. He can play tackle, guard and center. There aren't too many in the country who can do that. He's a talented guy.

"The negative is that would be our third center in three years and the next year would be the fourth center in four years. You'd like to have one for two to three years consistently. We've got to get our best five (offensive linemen) on the field and right now he's obviously one of the five best."

Wednesday’s practice provided quite a surprise for recruiting fans in attendance. Two of the state’s top linebacker prospects, Lerentee McCray and Vincent Williams, were present to take in practice and speak with the Florida coaches.

Watching the coaching staff interact with the two players, it is evident that the team’s depth issues at linebacker have moved the two players near the top of their recruiting board.
One of the most highly recruited linebackers in the southeast so far has been Ridge Community High School prospect Vincent Williams.
On Wednesday, Williams made the trip to the Florida campus, where he was able to watch the national champions during one of their spring practices.
“It was good,†Williams said. “I got there at around two. We just got to walk around and we talked to some f the coaches.â€Â
