If you understand the math, it makes sense to go for 2. Statistically speaking, you'll convert 50% of your 2-point attempts. If you convert there, a TD and FG gives you the lead. If you don't, a TD+2 and FG ties it. Again, you will convert one of them, statistically speaking. If it's the first one, you're in a good position. It didn't work, but it makes sense.
