OL: Stil A Case for Major Concern

Thomas looked poor the other night and Satele was letting Soliai in more than I would like. He was steering him out of the play, but the penetration was too much.

Manster McCoy and a good TB D will show us a whole lot more than Atlanta. I can see problems surfacing.

Yeah but Soliai is a monster.

Not like we don't face monsters like him (Wilfork, Dareus, Harrison et al) but it's a hard bar to judge Satele, who is barely mediocre IMO, by.

I will give Satele credit... it seem he is smart enough or exprienced enough to let Solia have his way in a direction that has no ill effect on the play at hand..

This team is not set up to be a downhill team. The running game will be predicated on the passing game. In the running game the line will be active and moving a lot. A lot of the running game is also going to be a lot of short passes. This team will more than likely struggle when they need to punch it up the gut.

If they can hold up for the passing plays, and tannehill does what we all expect when given a clean pocket, which is excel, then the running game should be just fine. As long as we aren't constantly failing in the passing game we can use the run sparingly and it should be much improved. I do worry though that we don't have anyone that can get us those tough yards in the backfield though. I'm not a big Moreno fan really, I think hr was a product of teams being terrified of Peyton, but I am really really hoping he proves me wrong!

And he looked like crap again this week...

I have a feeling you could be right - but then again, the starting 5 had 10 plays together if I'm not mistaken. There were some good running plays, e.g. Miller from the 10 going in and made 5 yards - just before the TD - so it could be a case of letting it/them develop.

However, that being said, coming back to your point - how I see it is this - we will need 2 things to help the running game.

1. The pass to set up the run [ makes it difficult when you actually need to run the ball though ]

2. RT will have to be a threat after handing the ball off - case in point, the 3rd down conversion early in the 1st drive - the backside DE should have snuffed it out, but he held contain as RT had an ever so slight movement and handed the ball off as if he was doing the zone read.

Not saying RT should run the zone read or be used more as a runner - quite the opposite - he's there to throw the ball and I really wouldn't use him as a runner as you'll just wear him down - but he can influence back side defenders if he is disciplined.
You may be disappointed if you don't want him to run. You can see him influencing the defense after hand offs (fairly often tonight and I think every play last week). Not only will he run but you can see him taking some hits even on hand offs tonight. Not all that vicious, but he's getting bumped around.

Yes, this is what we've been saying for a long time, that they're focused on protecting Tannehill and improving the pass protection, not running the ball.

Joe said in the press conference that he thought he'd get more production out of the run game tonight, and that he thought we'd be "better" at it.

Like someone else said, to run the ball we need the spread out defenses, it's the only way. This O line is not going to block for the run, and Lamar Miller always needs a big hole.

Dallas Thomas looked about like I expected him to look against Tampa Bay and Gerald McCoy ... very bad. We definitely need 1 more decent OG.

If Smith can't displace Thomas ... we are screwed. Turner needs time, but Smith is a vet.

Can u really judge our o-line and overall running game based off 10 plays and a vanilla game plan??? Bring this topic back week 3 of regular season and we can talk.
Popular opinion is that preseason means nothing. However it does. But it's not like we had a good Oline and were waiting for it to get bad. We had a crappy Oline and were waiting for it to get good. There's a lot of work to do. Hopefully we see something long before week three.
