Omar: South Florida has some of the worst sports fans in the nation

I'm just very "bleh" about this season to be honest. Not nearly as excited as usual. They might as well turn my area of Florida into (well, guess it already is) Red Sox/Pats nation (they're building them a new training facility down the st from me). It's tiresome, but I'm probably out of this state in a couple years so I guess I'll contribute to the issue. Florida sucks ;(.

As a fanatic, I can say I go to the games (not every game) and sit there watching what we have been watching the past coupke of years and regreting sometimes going. It's hard to enjoy yourself when you are trying to yell, scream and get hype only to be disappointed 9x out of 10. It's rough. Winning/excitement solves it all.

What's the worst thing for me when I go is that down-in-the-dumps feeling prolonged by inching out of the parking lots and onto the turnpike. You just want to get the **** out and away from there as fast as possible -but instead generate more negative energy. The ride home also always seems a lot longer.

if the games were sold out regardless of record last year, i'm thinking it would at least give us a two game swing in record. so instead of ending the year at 7-9, we would have been 9-7 with a winning record. all the players and coaches around the league acknowldedge that home field noise, crowds, etc.... do effect the games. unfortunately for us, our fans will probably break out in an orton chant at the 1st incompletion this year.

you guys all bash omar. he does a great job. I follow a lot of other beat writers you aren't putting half the time or effort in omar is. You guys expect a writer to kiss our *** because he writes for our team is funny he tells it how it is. Our Fo are fool for signing Marc is looks horrible, and its pathetic that I am a die hard dolphins fan and would love the chance to go to MNF. Its pathetic we can not sell out our own stadium to our own fans for the home opener and for MNF opener I am sick of this fan base.

This one's for you my dredlockian homey

Ah, now the fair weather fan comes out.

You must spend money to be a fan now?

You really aren't a conservative...You are upset that fans are engaging in capitalism.

It's all about the free market...We will only spend money on GOOD things. More and more people are learning about it in this downturn.

I'm happy since I get to see the games for FREE.

You are upset that I won't be spending $6k per year on 4 premium seats.
The problem goes WAY beyond when this team is "bad". They don't always sell out playoff games and even when the team is winning and in the playoff hunt there are thousands of empty seats and tons of opposing fans.

No, you don't need to spend money to be a fan. But people that say they only support the team when they are winning is the DEFINITION of what a fair wheather fan is. I don't care if the team is 15-1 or 1-15, I still support them and make it known that they are MY team. I don't go into hiding or say, "once they start winning I will come back." They are MY team and I will support them during the tough times. That doesn't mean you need to go out and buy season tickets during a down year, but what about the times when they are winning? What is the excuse then?

Being an "out of stater" is tough, because I can't go to every home game, but I make it a point to get down to at least one game a year. For the other games I buy NFL Sunday Ticket. I never miss watching a game and that includes the 1-15 year in 2007. Doesn't mean I don't get upset or disappointed in the team, I do. You don't want to be around me on Sundays that they lose.

You say to move down to Miami if I have a problem. I would if I could, but I am not going to leave my job and move away from my family(all of who live in this area) to go to a place I honestly probably wouldn't enjoy living in. I love the Dolphins and I like Miami, but I wouldn't live there.

I am a season ticket holder for Penn State and will continue to be even though they have bad years. I live over two hours away and usually stay over night, but I have been making the trip every year and every home game back since I was in elementary school. Doesn't matter if they suck or not, I still support them and root them on. If I can be even a small part in helping the team win(part of the 12th man) than I will do everything I possibly can. I see Bills fans and Eagles fans that support their team even when things look gloomy, can't say the same about Miami fans. You live in South Florida so you probably think what is going on is normal and happens eveywhere. It is not and it seems only the "out of towners" can see it. Probably because we can see what is going on in other parts of the country. You would never see 347 fans at a Phillies game.

Sorry, but blaming the fan base for having no enthusiasm when a team sucks is like blaming a class of students for not learning when a teacher sucks.

And the kindest thing I can say about Omar is that he's no Edwin Pope.

It's interesting to me how someone can LOVE the Miami Dolphins yet HATE the city of Miami and all the people who live there.
It's a fantastic city where there is ALWAYS lots of fun things to do.
Lot's of competition of every dollar spent on entertainment and the beach is just 20 mins away and free for all.
When the Fins put a good team on the field the fans will come. If not they'll do something else.
If your not from here you'll never understand and that's ok but please stop knocking the city and people who live there because , believe it or not , Dolphin football is not the only game in town and until it gets to the next level the average fan will probably stay home.

The problem is that a large portion of the local fan base is not passionate about football. The Lions fill up their stadium better than the Phins. I understand why they aren't going, and I don't blame them, but most fan bases turn out to watch their team no matter how bad things get. The Dolphins had trouble keeping the stadium full even when they were in the playoffs every year.

I went to two last year...the Sunday night Jets game and the Browns game. The Jets game was good even though we lost, but the Browns game was just a total abortion. i was actually sorry I went to that game. Just totally God awful. Games like that linger in people's minds, especially when it happens on a regular basis. We went 1-7 at home last year. Seriously. Thats just sad. Nobody is going to fork over money for that. Matter of fact, we always suck at home lately. And then the fans are somehow wrong for not showing up? Get real. Play with sense at home and then maybe people will come out. Put an exciting product on the field. Get a real offense.
I was at the Lions game. My first Phins game in that stadium since they retired Marino's number. I won't be at a game there again for a long time.

Yea i know Cleveland and Buffalo and Detriot always sell out every game even when they lose.

Ever been to any of these places ? I have. In the winter it's cold and depressing. Football is all they got.

The winter in Miami is great. The city about doubles in population from all the snow birds. There are parades and events going on all the time. The golf courses are still green , not brown. The beaches are open and full of people. South Beach is packed with beauty's from all over the world.
Wonder why our stands have so may Jet and Pat fans there ?
Where would you rather spend your winters ? NO CONTEST

its not just a Miami problem tvs are too good and cheap for most not to stay home and watch the game in the comfort of their living room. No lines for bathroom no expensive beers and food. No sunburns can flip to other games during commercials. We are not the only ones having probs selling tickets. Florida is more of a college state nowadays anyways.

um...

Detriot was blacked out most of the season last few years...

Bad example

Take Green Bay instead. Great team but they sell out years in advance even when they lose.

The ONLY game in town , hell in the whole state. Just not that way in South Florida.

There is only one job tougher in Miami then being the Quarterback of the Dolphins and that is being their beat writer. When they point out the
obvious we whine when they support the team they are homers. It is a miserable existence being a Miami fan but a cross we must bare.
