Only two quarterbacks taken out of the first round since 2003 are considered star material today. Matt Schaub was drafted in the third round by Atlanta, sat three years, then traded to Houston. Tony Romo was undrafted. Neither, by the way, has won a playoff game. Can you still find good quarterbacks out of the first round? Sure. But it's not the way to construct your blueprint for building a champion. The odds are just too great.

Here's the conversation-ending stat to those wanting the Dolphins pass on a 1st-rnd QB for a 2nd rnder: Only 1 QB drafted in Rounds 2-7 since 2003 has won a post-season game. One. That was T.J. Yates last year. Yates is the 3rd-string QB for Houston. Matt Schaub would've filled that criteria if he had been healthy for Houston. But, either way, if there's a blemish in a quarterback that pushes him out from the 1st rnd it doesn't disappear. Consider: 98 QBs were drafted since 2003 in Rnds 2-7.

So you really wanna take a risk on weeden/osweiler?

If you don't take risks, you will never get rewarded.

“Pitiful is the person who is afraid of taking risks. Perhaps this person will never be disappointed or disillusioned; perhaps she won’t suffer the way people do when they have a dream to follow. But when that person looks back – and at some point everyone looks back – she will hear her heart saying, “What have you done with the miracles that God planted in your days? What have you done with the talents God bestowed on you? You buried yourself in a cave because you were fearful of losing those talents. So this is your heritage; the certainty that you wasted your life.”

How many QB's taken in the 1st round are starting for the team that drafted them?

thats why I think we should draft tannehill

At this point, I won't complain about taking ANY QB. We need a QB, somewhere, somehow, and got to hope one of them pans out...

Heck, I wouldn't be opposed to taking Tannehill and then another QB in the 4th...

There are first-round QBs and then there are QBs that get taken in the first round due to overdrafting.  My personal take is that Tannehill is in the latter category.  Would I draft him?  Yes, I'd take a risk on him in the 2nd, the same way we took a risk on Beck and Henne.  But drafting him in the first round does not make him a first round QB, nor does it endow him with any greater statistical probability of success.

Put another way, I agree we must draft a first-round QB (which is different than saying "we must draft a QB in the first round").  But there aren't any available to us this draft.

Tell that to Jeff "safe" Ireland... He thinks tackles and de is more important than Qb.

We are lucky is that fool takes a Qb in ANY round

And when he becomes a bust, your theory will hold zero water.

But Tannehill is the next big thing. :idk:

I would personally take Weeden over Tannehill, but if the coaches and FO find that Tannehill is worth the 8th pick (or even a 1st round pick), so be it.

I like Weeden over Tannehill as well, but the problem is you better hope he comes in and wins the starting job.  Yes, he might be able to beat a Chad Henne, but I don't think it's likely he beats out Moore & Garrard immediately.  So then you have him sitting, and the age clock is tickin'...

Im dissappointed. I spent a good few minutes of my life, making a list of successful QB's such as Aaron Rodgers, Ben Roethlisberger, Phillip Rivers, Eli Manning, Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Cam Newton..... and then I realized it said "OUT OF the 1st round." sigh :(

LOL, I did the same thing at first.  I was like "what about Flacco?  what about Aaron freakin' Rodgers?  What about Eli?"

You don't draft a QB in the 1st round, much less a TOP 10 pick, and sit him. The Jets, moved up and grabbed their QB and have commited long term to him. Now do I think that was smart? NO. But at least after 3-4 years you know what you have.

Unfortunately, like the NYJ, MIA will be stuck with a below avg project all the while not having the weapons Sanchita had his first few years to help acclimate him to the job. So MIA is in the position to draft a TOP player this year, and IMO Tannehill isn't a TOP player nor a TOP talent. The same people who hate on Henne, will be doing the same when this kid is throwing to Revis more than he is to Bess.
