Just a bit of a side note for all who complain about us not picking a QB in the 1st round since Marino. From all "accounts" Marino wasn't really even on our board (as far as in the 1st round anyway). We had just been to the super bowl, with a young QB that the team was "developing" in Woodley. Marinos stock had REALLY dropped due to "personality issues" and racial rumors. Shula had stated in interviews that he more or less "took a chance" on him due to his on the field production, and his "upside". I doubt that the 'Skins would have taken him either (after winning the SB), which would have pushed him to 2nd round.
So in a nutshell, I guess you could say he just "fell" to us. Which would mean it's been EVEN LONGER since we PLANNED to draft a QB in the 1st round. BTW, how are all the people here that wanted us to draft Quinn in the 1st round feeling now??

Once in a lifetime. Pats fans better prepare for the languish that comes with the beauty of finding a gem in the rough. Their turn to morn is soon.

I love all the guys on here that ***** about our drafting "corn fed" linemen. If you check out shulas draft history, most of his 1st rounders were OL/DL or LB. I think he did ok with that plan.

They tend to not bring that up very often.

No...they won't. They regularly get guys in the later rounds while they still have a good starter...they only need 1 to pan out every 10 years or so...

Didn't they take Mallett....we'll see how that ends up....

We didn't really try as often as we should have while we had Marino.

But in all fairness, he was set at the QB position nearly his entire career with Miami.

He had Griese and Marino with brief appearances of Strock and Woodley. Both Griese and Marino were drafted in the 1st.

They won't find another Tom Brady. Sorry they just won't.

Garbage, Marino dropped due to drug rumors(not racial rumors), he was still drafted number 1 overall in the USFL draft. Shula was shocked he was still there when his pick came and jumped all over him.

Woodley was a disaster in Superbowl 17 and Shula jumped at a chance to upgrade. Remember Woodley did not complete a pass in the second half of that superbowl and was largely responsible for the loss.

Whether the pick was planned or not, Shula saw the incredible value and made the selection.....and how did it payoff?

No one is saying draft QB in round 1 for the sake of it, what you need to do is identify the round 1 QB talent that is worth taking, particullary when you HAVE NO FRANCHISE QB and go get him, even if it means trading up.

Their mourning period will he softened by having the most mechanically sound and NFL ready Qb from this years draft waiting in the wings. He will have had 3-4 years to learn under one of the greatest qb's of all time, and 3-4 years to work out his personal issues which are the only reason he wasn't a top 10 pick. Brady will torch the Phins for a few more years, and then Mallet will take over and do the same. And I'll be stuck listening to everyone and their mother up here talking about what a genius Bill B is for another 10 years.

And we'll all still be here one these boards arguing if we should trade for an agerage staring QB who is made to look like a football god by whatever 2nd round scrub this team is trying to pass off as a franchise Qb. While the rest of us will still be bitter from another year where we pass up on a potential franchise Qb to draft another ****ing gaurd.

Not that I know much about the context of Marino falling to us, but it reminds me of how Rodgers fell to the Packers.

Not really sure what the OP is trying to say here... That it is OK, not drafting QB's in the 1st??? The Dolphins own history should adequately refute that line of thinking!!!

The surest way.. In fact the ONLY way to absolutely MISS every time on a franchise QB is to NOT look for one... People LOVE to lambaste anyone who mentions Quinn... Personally I would have taken Quinn any day of the week and twice on Tuesday over Ginn. Not because I think he is anything but BECAUSE HE PLAYS THE MOST IMPORTANT POSITION ON THE FIELD. You know the position... The one that is involved in EVERY single offensive play?

I want my FO to never stop looking... To expend however many picks necessary on bust after bust... Until they find a franchise guy. Picking through other teams garbage... or drafting 'project' QB's later is suicide... And it it reeks of runaway ego... You might as well just hold a presser to announce to everyone that you are smarter than everyone else... eg: Beck, Henne, White.

Identify your guy... Show some cojones and do what it takes to go and get him. The Jets did exactly that... They traded their draft for 'the guy'... Regardless of what you think of their franchise or Sanchez you have to applaud the philosophy and it is certainly working for them.

So do it. Find a FO that can judge talent and has the stones to go after it. Bust as many times as necessary... but NEVER... EVER STOP LOOKING.

I'm not complaining about them not taking a QB in the first round at all, but if you read some of Shue's books on the subject, Marino was on their board, they just couldn't believe that he was still available. It was not a position of 'need', as you said, but when Marino was sitting there, Shue's just about came thru the phone getting the pick to the commish...

Look, any player you draft is a risk. JT and ZT probably two of the most revered players in Fins history were 3rd and 5th round choices, and not targeted any higher than they went by JJ... Naturally we all know the nauseating Brady 6th round pick story. I think too many Fins fans are hoping that every guy that takes a snap in a fins uniform is Dan Marino...get over it folks...Those guys only come around once in a while...

As for Quinn, I was not a proponent of taking Quinn, but I, like most of us, was flabbergasted when we didn't take him...I was really shocked that we didn't take him, not because I thought he was the best player we could get, but because we needed a QB and he linked to us time after time in every mock draft that year. Looks as though both Cleveland and Miami were wrong in that draft though...
