Our OL

A few things are in play here. New blocking scheme, new linemen (Columbo, Pouncey), rookie (Pouncey), missing stalwart (Long), new position (Carey), and limited hitting practice time.

Good OL play is all about teamwork, so with so much new and limited time together, there couldn't really be any chemistry yet. How they wil be later is up in the air, but you couldn't expect them to be anything but poor with this little time together. And they have been poor.

Mike Pouncey is not his brother, and unfortunately it appears Sparano is banking on Mike being as good as Maukrice was as a rookie Center. IMHO, that's a very bad decision. Pouncey would have been best served being a LG between good veterans Long and O'Hara rather than being thrust into Center from the get-go. Incognito is overmatched at LG and should be at RG. I'd say the jury is still out how Vernon Carey will be as a Guard in the new blocking scheme--it doesn't really suit him. Our RT position looks problematic. We need one of the backup types to step up or Columbo to ratchet up his play to 2009 level or we will be in trouble.

It definitely could come together. Veterans tend to coast through pre-season on their B games. The line needs time to gel, etc. But there really are no positive signs and too many question marks. For an OL coach as a Head Coach and with so many high draft picks and expensive free agents, I'd call our OL a complete failure ... wih the potential to become an Epic Fail. :-( Fingers crossed that they get it together.

I agree with Nublar that O-lines need time to gel, but not sure time is going to help Columbo or maybe even Carey.

I can't believe I am saying it but Murtha has looked a heck of a lot better at LT than Columbo has at RT, so maybe once Jake is healthy they will see what Murtha has at RT.

Someone on here did a great o-line analysis from our first preseason game, and it was basically Carey and Columbo who killed us.

Honestly i rather have Murtha in who at least has some upside.. I saw the cowboys a lot last year (buddy is a cowboys fan) and even went to the new stadium to see the Boyz get destroyed by the Giants. Columbo was getting manhandled by the Giants DEs.. Same thing happened to their secondary as Hakeem Nicks put it some serious work.
 
Great posts so far. If I may add though, if the right side of the Oline is so so, as it appears to be and with a rook at center, man, that makes it hard to do anything. In this instance Long and Incognito are not going to be able to overcome that. Watch what Atlanta did, they completely pushed our RS into the middle of the play and that stuffed things up. Yes Pouncey was running around like a wide eyed rookie but our RG and RT did not do anything to help the kid out.

Look at any team you wish, any team. If one side of the Oline is as poor as our right side is now, combine that with a QB still attempting to get up to par, well. Honest, how pretty or good do anyof you think an offense can be operating under those circumstances. I wish they would have left Incognito at center, he can push a pile. Pouncey at LG and to be honest at this point, Murtha at RT and Lord only knows who at RG. Vernon better pick up his game. I think the reserves will be Garner, probably Berger, and either Columbo or Murtha.

Good post. I agree with you. I think the way they are playing right now, Murtha would beat out Columbo and I don't even think it would be a close competition.

Whats happ with Joe Berger. Last year he started 14 games, although not the best, I would have expected improvement this yr, but they are even testing Garner at Centre ahead of him.

On his Sirius training camp interview, Sparano said he put Pouncey between Cary and Incognito to learn and he said he is familiar with Columbo's abilities from Dallas days. It makes sense to arrange the line the way you want it now, rather than shuffling it around mid-season. All of these guys are learning a new offensive scheme so they all get a fresh start.

O"Hara is not going to do much. People too much into what he WAS instead of what he IS right now. Do you really think if he was as good as many imagine he would still be on the open market ? No, a really good center is like finding a nugget of gold in a stream bed.

I imagine most he was offered, by any team, was a one year contract and not even near what he thinks he should be getting. There is no use in bringing in someone like him when you are trying to build a team. He turned 34 in June. As a back up at minimum, fine. As a starter ? No and thats why 31 other NFL teams are thinking the same way.
 
I wonder if anyone is looking at Bryant McKinnie, what it would cost to bring him in? He could be a massive RT.

I dont want Ohara the person I Quoted stated Pouncey should be playing between Long and Ohara.

Got your quote but if you do not want O'Hara as a person how the hell could Pouncey play in between them ? Oh, you are among the ones that think its easy to put 5 all Pros on the offensive line, year after year. No team in the NFL has more then 2 all pros on their Oline and as of late, O'Hara has not been playing all pro type football. Kid is learning good alongside Incognito and Carey. In reality, does not matter where Pouncey plays, no one but himself will dictate how he plays. To me, he is a shade in talent compared to his brother. Had problems in College and that does not change quickly
 
we should have jumped all over blalock early and locked him up. i foresee big problems again. prognosis negative so to speak.

McKinnie was cut by his own team due to being EXTREMELY overweight and having blood pressure and cholesterol issues that were off the scale. So bring in a guy who does not care about taking care of himself ? 31 other NFL teams seem to agree, stay away from Bryant McKinnie. This kid may have just threw away his chance to play in the NFL again. If a player cannot give himself direction in regards to his health and being in shape to perform his craft effectively then no coach on the planet earth will be able to give him direction. These are big boys. Coaches do not want to spend time being a friggin babysitter.
